I've been reading a few posts lately that some run 5w30 synthetic instead of 5w20. I've been running 5w20 PUP in my 5.7 hemi. I don't have the tick in my hemi, but would it be worth it to run 5w30 PUP, Amsoil SS , or a comparable oil instead? I have 55k miles on my truck.

I want to say theres about 50% on here switched to 5W30. Many as I do think 5W20 is too thin. Search the forum for this tons of great info on here about this subject. Oil Brand is another big one too.

Switched mine to 5w30 at 6,000 miles, would have done it sooner but thought I would use the free oil change I had.

The HD trucks spec out 5w30 or 0w40 so no reason the 1500s cant run the same.

All the dealerships and probably anyone associated with FCA will tell you that 5/30 will mess up you're MDS or throw a code for wrong oil. Both are complete and utter bs. All the 5/20 is for is for a minisqual amount of better fuel mileage, that's it. PUP, Amsoil SS, and Redline are all good oils. My engine has been the smoothest and quietest and MDS works the smoothest on Redline 5/30. I never tried PUP but several have reported real good service from it also.

I run 5w30 PUP with no problems. Also no notable changes from when I was running 5w20 PUP.

If you have an extended or lifetime FCA warranty, you are locked into using 5/20.

If I had lifetime warranty id just take it to the dealer and say due for an oil change. No, I'm not upgrading to synthetic, whatever you normally put in for you're basic oil change. That way it's their oil, their labor, and if it grenades it's their problem.

Even if it makes the hemi sound like a diesel?

I have maxcare lifetime and the cheap dealer oil changes sound good on paper but not so much in practice, at least in my brain.

Why not take better care of it than required... It's still your (my) truck.

I just swapped in pup 5-30 in mine, and I have to say, the truck seems to like it. Not sure what was in it before, I only had one oil change done by the shop after I bought it, then I did my own. I have 130k on it.

Only if you buy you're own oil and take it in and have them change it. I know for a fact that my local ram dealer does not have nor can they get PUP in either 5/20 or 5/30. If you take you're ram in there and request a synthetic oil change they call either Napa or advance auto and get house brand oil. Jus sayin because everyone is so worried about their lifetime warranty being voided. I don't have one so I run what I want.

Nothing wrong with PP.
PUP only has a slightly different Additive package.
A bit more calcium/magnesium for extra cleaning.

Same GTL base oil chemistry.

Most say Your engine is not that sensitive (Was not created with feelings) it will never know the difference.

As you move around in viscositys the Additive package & formulations change a bit more.

That makes me laugh because chances are the "house oil" doesnt meet the Chrysler spec.....

Jus sayin, if you take it to a dealer don't depend on them putting the right stuff in. That's why I change my own oil.

That's just like every time they call wanting PP 5/30 EURO I know they've got an eco diesel in for an oil change. They should be using 5/40 in the eco diesel.

That's scary.

OTOH, if they ever tried to analyze the oil because of a blown engine, would they blame the customer even if they had proof the dealer did the most recent oil change?

In California summer when temps are high I run 5-30. I think I’ll run 5-30 all the time. In colder climates I would stay with 5-20. Absolutely no change in how the truck runs (no surprise there) and I doubt a dealer would know/care as long as there is oil there. If this engine blows up because I used 5-30 then I will never own another ram. My Subaru ran with 10-30, 5-30 or 5-40 or whatever I had in the garage including diesel oils. Ran perfect for 13 years and I ended up giving it to in laws that still drive it today. Not a leak anywhere and never been to the stealer, I mean the dealer.

So you think 5w20 is better then 0w30 in cold climates using the same logic as the rest of your statement?

Really not much difference from 0 to 5 unless you just live in a super cold area.

I speak in general not absolute terms. Genrally 0w or 5w makes very little difference unless you live in absolutely cold miserable conditions.
