You have to Buy something for your wife every time you buy something for yourself?

Considering she's a stay at home mom with no income of her own, generally speaking yes. I respect the effort she puts into raising our kids so if I get toys she should be able to.

Possibly in the next couple of years she'll be back to work full time and that might change a bit since she'll have her own income.

After commenting that the gas cap fixed my truck, it threw P0456 again tonight, LOL. It did last for several months. I bought a cheap code reader to clear codes tonight.

How do I know if a 6.4L is the 410hp or a 367hp? I searched everywhere and get mixed answers. Called two dealers and got 2 different answers. Its out of a 2015 2500 Crew Cab SLT VIN 3C6UR5JJ5FG544677

As far as I know all the heavy duty 6.4s have been rated at the same 410hp and 429 ft/lbs. Noise level requirements has been the source provided by many people as to the lower horsepower rating in the chassis cabs.

410 HP stock from a 6.4L Hemi in a 4th gen RAM 2500. The 5.7L are 395 HP I believe.

Yeah there is more to it than that though and the "medium duty" engine is assigned to most of 2500 "Heavy Duty" badged trucks if that isn't confusing enough.

So I did more digging on the subject and went to a dealer, asked a bunch of questions and had them dig into their computers but there still isn't clear info on these.

Mega Cab 2500 models apparently only get the lower hp.

ESA sales code is the "Medium Duty" engine
ESB sales code is the "Heavy Duty" engine.

https://www.moparrepairconnection.com/assets/pdf/catalogs/reman/engine-sales-codes.pdf

The odd part is ESA is equipped on most trucks in the 2500 lineup yet they all have "Heavy Duty" badging on the doors

Doesn't seem to be any info as to whether this is mostly a programming difference for the HP or if there are other mechanical differences.

The dealer was incorrect. FCA only produced one version of the HEMI 6.4 engine since 2014...the 410 HP/429 ft lbs. It is used in both the 2500/3500 trucks and chassis cab trucks (Class 2b and 3) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ram_Pickup#Engines_4. They may another version of that engine for real "medium and heavy" duty trucks (class 4 through 8) but I highly doubt it.

Incorrect info!

Finally found a bit more info though check out page 9 on this RAM Pocket Guide document. Shows 2500/3500 does utilize the 410hp version but 3500 and chassis cab utilize the 370hp and 4500/5500 utilize the 366hp version.

RAM 2500/3500
"THE 6.4L HEMI V8 WITH MDS/FUEL SAVER TECHNOLOGY: 410 HP / 429 LB-FT Performance here combines the best: VVT, MDS/ Fuel Saver Technology, Individual Cylinder Fuel Control and interactive Deceleration Fuel ShutOff (iDFSO). The assets that come with this available engine for Ram Heavy Duty pickups translate into bottom-line strength and proven efficiency, with the confidence to take on tough jobs."

RAM 3500/4500/5500 CHASSIS CAB
"THE 6.4L HEMI V8 WITH MDS/FUEL SAVER TECHNOLOGY: 370 HP (410 HP*) / 429 LB-FT (3500); 366 HP / 429 LB-FT (4500/5500) The standard engine for all Ram Chassis Cab models provides outstanding gas-powered V8 performance—and using 87-octane unleaded gas. Mate the 6.4L HEMI V8 with the available AISIN® transmission, and you’ve got stellar available PTO capability that efficiently uses only four of its cylinders (static). Configurations: 3500 models mate the 6.4L HEMI V8 with the 66RFE 6-speed automatic, with the AISIN AS66RC available for increased payload and towing capability; Ram 4500/5500 models mate it solely to the AISIN transmission."

*Only when the available 10K GVWR model is ordered on 3500 SRW with 66RFE automatic transmission

Yes...I dont believe everything I read. But it looks like the 2500 never recieved a detuned version of the Hemi. Just 3500 and up chassis cabs.

Couple things(this got hashed out in a thread back in ‘14). It’s not the 3500s and the chassis cabs, it only the chassis cabs. Also, the engine has the same output. It’s derated not detuned. If you look at the specs you’ll notice that lower horsepower is also stated at a lower RPM. It’s purely for noise rating numbers for commercial use. Same motor, same features, same tuning, and same output.

Hi everyone. I own a 2017 3500 SRW chassis cab 6.4 with the Aisin tranny. For its heavy duty performance it is limited to a max RPM of 4650. This means I miss out on the extra horsepower available in the upper 20% or so of the powerband. Since max torque is computed at around 4000, that number stays the same at 429 lb-ft. The engine is NOT detuned, they just have to list the horsepower at 4650 RPM instead of 5900. With a nine foot utility bed and total weight of about 10,400 she's not gonna win any drag races but she's still pretty damn strong. GVWR is 11,000 with max payload of 4,830 (3,750 after subtracting weight of empty utility bed) and max towing is 17,680. Absolutely the best truck I have ever owned.

Ode to the 6 speed transmission:

It's crap, it's garbage
It is crap and garbage

Thank you.
I bought my 2014 Ram 2500 6.4 CC a few months ago and it had a strange whistle that progressively got worse. it was barely noticeable at first like maybe a crack in the airbox i thought.
i poked around under the hood but could not find an obvious culprit. It was loud enough for concern so while it was at the dealer for an oil change I asked them to check it out. turns out the trans fluid was dark and stinky and upon further examination there was metal in the pan. New tranny is on the way and replacement will be done next week. The dealer was great and had no trouble getting it covered under the powertrain warranty. Truck has 34400 miles. I can't account for the first owners use of the truck but I saw no indication of abuse. Otherwise I love the truck but that 6 speed does not impress me in the least. Have one in my 2017 work truck and that one isn't any better performance wise. The old 4 speed OD transmission was way better in my opinion. Have to call the dealer and ensure a new torque converter is part of the deal as well as flushing the lines/radiator/cooler. Will keep you posted.
PS whoever is endorsing this 6 speed at Ram/Dodge/Chrysler/Fiat should be kicked squarely in the nuts.... Repeatedly.

Lol 1 simple button push makes that 6speed a lot better. 2 button pushes and it’s almost a different transmission.

Well 1 push tow/haul. Push tow/haul and your +- button to 5th. That’s 2 presses.

Well by pressing tow/haul the first time that already limits the transmission to 5th gear even though it will show 6th gear as an option. The only thing pressing the +- sellector will do is keep the truck from turning on MDS while in tow/haul. But mine has never gone into MDS in tow/haul.
I do like seeing which gear the truck is in though.
