Hey guys............

I thought it was my imagination, smelling coolant at the front of the truck after it was warm..........but I checked the overflow bottle this AM and it's 1/2" below the LOW line when cold. So it's definitely leaking or using coolant somehow. I don't see any evidence of seepage/leaking/and no spots on the driveway. Oil is clean.

22,000 miles, 2017 6.4L

Anybody ever figure out what was actually causing this before I take it to the dealer???

22k miles and missing coolant in anyway would be going to the dealer... If you don't see any spots then it could be internal.. have you noticed any white smoke out the tail pipes?

Possibly........reading the forums, there were several guys complaining about this same thing in 2014 + 2015............some radiator caps, hoses, and radiators were suspect. I can't find much since. And I can't find anyone who;s done HG on them..........

Wouldn’t hurt to do used oil analysis to make sure it isn’t getting into your crank case

I had a pin hole in my radiator. Saw the discolored streak from the top drivers side.

Mine smells of coolant occasionally. Don't notice any major coolant loss or anything. Thought I read somewhere it was the hoses?

I can believe it is very slow and evaporation from that stupid cap on the reservoir or possibly a hose..

I get the smell too but I have not really noticed a drop in coolant.

Mine dropped one time and had a smell. Dealer pressure tested it and it checked out fine. Hasn't leaked any since. I dont understand it. Now that I've gotten more miles on it I dont notice the smell anymore.

Same here.
Baught my truck new in 2014. Have 61,000 miles on it now. I have smealed coolant probably about 6 different times but coolant level has never been low. I too have not noticed the smell as much with more miles on it.

Funny enough I have never had the tank appear low or even had the smell on my Ram. But on my 6.4 Charger I noticed once a couple months ago it showed a bit low after recently taking a long trip. No smells though. I didn’t have the energy to deal with it when I noticed. So I said to myself I’d just keep an eye on it. After another shorter drive or two I took a look at the level again and it was perfectly normal and has been fine ever since. Car runs perfect and never gets hot even when I beat on it. So I just don’t know and don’t concern myself with it. I just keep an eye on it to make sure. Mopar coolant mysteries lol.

Hey guys, thanks for the info.

Ran it by the dealer this AM between school carpool runs and they put dye in and added quite a bit of coolant... Told me to drive it for a week and bring it back. Maybe I'll have the tailgate latch recall done at the same time LOL.

I'll update when I find out what it is.

I’ve had a 2015 RAM 1500 Sport with 5.7, own a 2015 Grand Cherokee with 3.6, and have a 2016 3509 with 6.4. They all have the coolant smell. My dealer has check all of them, and no leaks. Rumor has it the hoses are somewhat porous which is where the smell comes from. Wish I knew for sure. None ever seem low on fluid...

Affirmative bud. Came out a few months back and I already got the notice in the mail. That's about 3 or 4 now I have to take my truck back for. It's been great and I hate the thoughts of taking it in and letting them mess with it...but I'm soon not going to have any choice

Something about a part or latch failure could cause the gate to drop unexpectedly

What it the tailgate latch one?

They add a little clip to the handle/latch linkage assembly. It takes the tech longer to pull the access cover than to install the clip.

you have a Long Bed.. Long Beds are exempt from this recall for the tailgate for some reason.

This is a similar issues I had years ago with my 1997 V10 truck. That truck would "use" coolant. Yet never any on the ground, oil was always clean, no white stains in the engine compartment. Truck ran like a champ. Dealer pressure checked, hoses, etc. Finally replaced the radiator (no charge, by the way, even though by that time the truck was out of warranty, due to this being a documented issue). Don't know if that really fixed it, because I traded the truck soon after. (I should have kept, was a great truck).

This was back in 2001, still before a lot of internet forums with good information. I later found out that some of the V10s had porous heads. Maybe that was my issue.

Hope you get yours sorted. No problems or smell (knock wood) with my current 5.7
