I recently acquired a 2012 1500, very nice low mileage [45,000] quad cab. It has the chrome clad 20" wheels. I would like to lower the truck, not for the look as much as my convenience. I am a 74 year old guy and stand about 5'9". I have no problem entering the cab now thanks to step bars, but in a few years it might not be as easy. I had my last truck for 14 years and would expect to keep this one a good while. So, could I have your input as to what is the best way to accomplish that. I will have no problem converting to 17" wheels if I can sell the 20's, but am unsure of additional lowering. Your thoughts will be appreciated.

Joe, my dad is 87, after i got my truck, i did the 2 inch rear lowering springs and my dad had some trouble getting in, basically had to climb in. I added running boards and it helped alot. I lowered it with a 2/4 belltech kit and he has no problem getting in. My mom who has bad knees and is a big woman can get in my lowered truck without too much struggle.
I know with a 2/4 to do it right you need the spring kit, good, proper sizee shocks, adj panhard bar, and likely control arm relocation brackets. You may be able to get by with a 1 inch front, 3inch drop, and going with a shorter tire and getting a similar ride height. Switching to 17s really isn't necessary

I lowered mine for the same reason. I used to drive Hummer's for years but recently became disabled and was experiencing much leg and back pain from getting in and out. When I purchased my 17 Ram for my daily driver it was a little high for me so I had it lowered 2" in the front and 5" in the rear. Easy to get in and out now, no more pain, drives great and look better lowered too.

Thanks for your replies. Do either of you use air lift in the rear? Do you use your trucks like trucks? Can they haul 1500 lbs?

I did 2 inch in rear and am ordering timber Grove air bags or air lift 5000 kit.. but I'd go 2/4 lowering as they suggested. And maybe air lift 1000 bags that go in the springs
