I bought my truck used with around 33,000 miles earlier this year, and I currently have about 39,000 miles on the truck. It was previously a lease, so I have no idea how it was driven or what it was used for. Right now my dash reads 256 idle hours and 985 driving hours, so approximately 20% of its total operating hours are idling. Is this anything to be concerned about?

OP FWIW I'm @ 42,799mi, 116 idle and 1683 of driving in moderate to heavy traffic. It's nothing to worry about, honestly just looks to me like the truck may have been a fleet or corp truck, or just someone who likes the engine at operating temp before driving.

I'm curious as to where he got his 1 hours = 25 miles driven conversion. There is a reason idling doesn't count on the odometer. Engine is not under load, its not putting any kind of power output, therefore the components are not getting worked as much as if you put a load on the engine (acceleration). I can see how fleet vehicles and like his example patrol cars might want to use service hours, but for regular every day people, I'd rather stick to miles.

But my concern is where he got that arbitrary number since it would be very very difficult to have an across the board for all engines service hour calculation since all engines are different. He talks about boats and generators and airplanes, but in those industries how many people really fabricate engines? is not that many so its easier to come up with a number across the board for everyone. There are many many car manufacturers, many many different types of engines with many configurations and ALL of them would perform differently.
