I call a real cam something well north of 7000. 6600 is street stuff.
9.25” rear axles are weak too. Why that isn’t the first thing everyone ditches is beyond me.
But yea. Trying to sound smart. I’m not the one spending a fortune on a brick to go 12s

Been there done that in my younger days, cams with shift points above 7200 sound great idling and at full throttle, but aren't really condusive to being a nice driving street cam, lol. My old 68 Z went 10.70's with a 433 BB and a 125 shot shot way back in the early 80's,as a kid I thought it was great, but now I wouldn't put up with a cam with more then 256 dgrees of duration, like I would back then. 4.88's and a 4,000 stall meant the car knew where every airport was.In those days 110 Avgas was you're friend, mixed with 1/2 a tank of farm Purple fuel.Farm purple back in the early days was the same as what you could buy in premium fuel at the pumps, and was a good choice to mix with avgas and keep a big cam/12.5-1 compression big block happy at 7200 rpm. Then I went the opposite way with my old low 11 sec 401 Hornet,it was a low compression /big cam combo, that I could fill up anywhere, but it needed all kinds of rpm and convertor to be drivable on the street, and it ate cranks about twice a summer, lol.Still questioning why you had a horsepower eating 727 behind a little 340,if you were on the ball, you would of had a 904 behind a 340,and went faster, lol
The limited slips in the 9.25 ZF's are weak, but you can circumvent that by sticking a True Trac unit in them. If you swat a curb sideways hard enough, you can break an axle, but that'll happen with the 12 bolts and 9" Fords to,just don't slide it into a curb and the axles are good for a fair bit of power. There's always the aftermarket for upgraded axles to,if you do start twisting an axle, but that applies to the other guys diffs to.

You suffer from this addiction just as bad as anyone. Lol.
I ran the 727 because it was a numbers drivetrain. I didn’t swap in a 904 because I flipped that particular car for twice the money I had into it. I knew then ******* money into a 340” motor was pointless when I could build 500+” for a fraction more, have more street friendly ride blah blah you know how it goes. And ******* money into a 904 to hold up to the rest was pointless as well.
That’s thing with this game. It’s directly proportional to dollars.
I still think gear rules on a small block na motor. Lol

Kudos to you Gary for starting this thread!!
So many "will these tires fit?", "what lights can I run?", and my favorite," got a link for that?".
I have nothing to contribute but this is the best read I've seen in a loooong time!
I would love to be in your dilemma (minus the disney adventures, been there done that) on making my truck a consistant quick 1/4 miler but as its my daily, no go!
Congratz on your dedication and perseverance and good luck man!!
You have a cheering section and the WhytRam is one of them!!

Thanks bud. And hey I'm not trying to be the fastest. I could care less about any of that. Too me I'm happy with running 12's. Fun enough to keep me entertained & not enough to break anything, other than possibly a ds. Lol

Ramdriver2018 seems to have the notion that there is no middle ground, there is only a slow stock truck or a high dollar high hp build. I hate that notion. Alot of the local grudge racers think that way. I'm on a few of the local racing pages & if it was up to some of them normal street cars & trucks wouldnt be allowed down the track. Thats flawed thinking, how did they get to the point of being all high & mighty in their high dollar build that secretly runs 7's or 8's. They had to have gotten in a normal car at 1 point & gotten hooked. All of that is why I am here with this thread.....the high & mighty local grudge racers seems to have the 2 local tracks in their pockets & they dont want those dumb ignorant street tire guys pulling up all their glorious track prep. The 2 local tracks have been more hard on the normal average Joes this yr & are having less & less nights where street tires are allowed. I mean I understand, its safety at stake but that leaves out old average Joe that enjoys bringing out his dd a few times a yr. Thats why I am making the move to a track tire b/c looking like if I dont get on board I'm limited to when I can go. That and I cant add anymore mods until I get the truck to hook up better.

These trucks are a fun platform to play with if your just looking to have something that is easy to mod & get in the 12's. Heck mine ran 13.7's stock. Lol With the few things I have done I can make a 12 sec pass, hook on my trailer & haul something or drive it 10 hrs away to the mountains. I like that, I like having something just fast enough that its fun but its just that....just fast enough....its still dependable & I can still use it as a truck.

In case you haven’t noticed, all of our trucks are “street” trucks. And mostly daily driven. Right now I’m driving my truck 120 miles a day for work. We didn’t pick a heavy ram truck so we could be running 8’s and 9’s in the 1/4. We happen to own rams because we like or need them. Since we are blessed with an already powerful Hemi, some of us like to push them to see how fast we can get them. Since most lightly nodded challengers and chargers only run 11-12’s, I would say what these guys have done in getting a bolt on 5000lb truck into deep 12’s is nothing to be ashamed of.

I Bleed Ram Trucks

But none of them really are just bolt on trucks running in the 12’s.
They are cammed, or bottle fed, Boosted etc.
Down a hill, in a mineshaft, in cool crisp air lots of things will run 12s.

That’s funny because Kyle tingle’s truck ran 11.99 with bolt ons, tires and some interior weight reduction.

Can anything be done to the aftermarket DS to eliminate the issues you mentioned about it?

Also, would you ever consider auto cross? I’ve never done it with a truck but I’ve seen guys do it in mini vans.

So far the few that have broken, like Ramdriver 2018 said, could be from something up in the suspension. The stock control arms are what sticks out to me. They dont control the rear end well at all due to the soft rubber bushings & allow the rear to meander around a good bit. You dont notice it until you put a good control arm such as Core. I believe that was the case with the 3.92 R/T I was talking about earlier. There have only been a handful that have broken, far less than the stock ds. The DSS doesnt allow for alot of suspension travel through. They are limited in their travel & that can be a contributing factor as the limited movement is causing extra stress on the back side of the trans.

I have thought about putting my front sway back on, playing with my shock settings & trying out the local autocross track. I may try & do it this yr just to see. With all the suspension work I have done it should do good on a corner carving track

My old stock 08 ram 4x4 quad cab could run 12.50s in the fall air at -5000 ft da.

That’s actually bs. It’s prob 12.80 lol

I’m not saying your 4x4 is ballast. I’m saying it’s irrelevent ballast even if it is because it’s located too far rear and too low to really drag you down. Sprung weight vs unsprung weight. We know 100lbs of extra rim isn’t always 1/10 in a street car. But it can be more if it’s 100lbs on top of the engine.
The power glide works best north of 800hp. Because they just don’t need the gear!
You guys winding 5000lb trucks out Need double the gears of the guy in the 2650lb car then.
Oh wait. That’s 6 gears. Not 5 lol
Don’t disregard my original point of being naturally aspirated. That’s key here. None of your experiences reflect that either. You guys are all spraying out of the hole, driving over your gear.
Exactly what I said like 4 pages ago.
Maybe if you guys put some real cams in. Ditched the bottle and 500lbs. You might see better 60’ with a 3.92. Maybe?
I can tell ya’all what the downside of running a tall gear on sticky tires. Wrecked axle splines. Diff parts, etc. Short gears will kill a motor quicker but tall gears will kill the back end

Yes when you really have alot of power you will tear up the rearend w/ tall gears. Thats what just happened to Matt from Moes last month in his silver truck. But I am far from his hp & will never be. The trucks that are faster than me with 3.55's installed are doing great on them

Let’s repost this here

d1c1f97314476c6474f63bb639c8f9a7.jpg

And the approx ratios for an old school 727/A518 (which I have)

b1cc6e5e36abe2d17a90034915132450.jpg

And a 545/645rfe in the other ram 1500’s

df080383b7d21b5fce0f46a9c3c61359.jpg

Like he said, the torque multiplication is already built into the 8 speeds with extra gears and much better spacing to-boot

Man thank you for posting this. I have been looking for the 8 speed ratios do to a little math with. I'm genuinely curious what 5th gear looks like at 6000, if its close to that magic 5350 rpm on the ds

You’re welcome, I found that on all-par under the 8 speed trans. Lots of info there

My tuner has an 05 turbocharged 392 putting down about 600hp, only mod to the 9.25 is a Detroit tru-trac. He races frequently and I don’t think he’s ever had a problem with it

There isnt many out there turning the 5.7 in a Ram 7000 rpms, if any at all

And I dont have all that much money in mine to run 12's. The only performance mods I have up until this point are a $1000 tune/computer, a $300 intake, a now $300 tb which I just got the other day, a $400 catless y pipe, $200 muffler & pulled the clutch fan & installed a 180 t-stat. In the grand scheme of things a little over $2000 in bolt ons added to a stock truck & it running 12's isnt bad at all. I have more money in suspension than I do in performance but thats my choice. I didnt have to deck out my suspension like I did & if I had it all to do over again there is no chance in hell I would have ever lowered the truck. It looks great but you just cant throw a few hundred dollar lowering kit on these 4th gen trucks & expect it to be right. At the very least they need the Illicit brackets to correct all the screwed up rear geometry. Belltech & the rest need to step up their game & provide the right brackets to insure their kits are right & safe. They dont care though. As long as the truck looks good sitting still & can make it from point a to point b. Doesnt matter if the product they put out makes the $40,000 trucks ride like a jalopy

I dont have any of that mess...just the mineshaft air. Lol Just a few bolt ons & have a slew of 12 second passes

What I really love about this thread is the enthusiasm of racing Ram Trucks. In my days of racing (76-81) you very seldom saw a truck on the drag strip, unless it was towing a broken vehicle off. I ran against one with my Super Bee and if I remember correctly is was one of the original Lil' Red Wagon's with a blueprinted and balanced 440. He was running a full race 727 Torqueflight against my blueprinted and balanced 426 hemi and standard transmission. We were both running low 10's and we ran 3 times. I came out on top twice and he holeshot me the third time and got the win. Those were the days. We were pretty fast for all steel cars. I was at a dragstrip recently where the newest versions of the 700+hp Hellcats were running 10's & even high 9's. I was impressed. I would love to still have my old Super Bee and stuff one of those under the hood and see what I could do with it. Ahhhh the memories of the smell of burning rubber and nitro exhaust!!

That’s what I was thinking. It’s fun to see trucks on the strip. Even seeing a lightly modified Ram R/T running in the 12’s is pretty damn awesome to watch.

The Hellcat really changed the game. For less than $70k you can go to a drag strip and run mid 10’s with nothing more than a good tire and some practice. And have a full warranty. Also daily drive the thing in comfort. Crazy.

Even the 392 cars are ridiculous. Mid $40’s and you are talking low 12’s, high 11’s stock as long as you can get it to hook. With a good tire I have seen them run a 3.8 second 0-60. N/A 4500 pound car with a warranty.

https://www.allpar.com/news/2018/11/bone-stock-hellcat-challenger-runs-a-10-937-42897

And the crazy ******** are working on getting the Hellephant to pass emissions.

There is a ton of great information contained in this thread so far. Members like Matt and Gary and Rick and Chrisp and a few others continue to test new ideas and try new set-ups to try to get the most out of our trucks, but in most cases, do it in a way that you can still drive your truck on the street. The information they have given us should help all of us that have an interest in street performance. Some of us have a few "bolt on's" and others just like to read about the possibilities that are available for their truck/s. Sadly to say, the gains that Ford has made lately with their trucks and the way many of them perform, we might need all the help we can get. Keep it up guys---this is a weekend warrior's paradise.

I didnt make it to the track yesterday like I wanted. The weather was too cold for them to open. The truck was supposed to go in for the gear install tomorrow but I want to test the dr's & 3.92's to see where I'm at before the swap. The plan is to go to the track Saturday with the truck & car & go play around then send the truck to get the gears installed next week.

And yea your right. W/ Ford now having the aluminum body & 5.0 mated to the new 10 speed the guys like myself have their hands full with them. They are running 13.2 bone stock
