On my 2019 the white strip lights above and below the LED headlights are on all the time the truck is running. Doesn't matter if in park, ebrake on, those lights are on all the time. Anyone figured a way to turn them off? It doesn't make sense to have them on all the time, night and day, whenever the truck is running. You would think they would only come on when the truck was put in gear .

What would putting the truck in gear have to do with anything? It's a stylistic cue, (and may also meet DRL criteria in certain markets), and from a programming standpoint, it's easier to have them come on with a single permisive, (ignition on), than routing the signal through a second permissive as well (such as engine on and truck in gear).

They might are supposed to be like that. I just saw one of those new 1500’s coming at me little bit ago and to my surprise, when the driver put on the turn signal to change lanes, I was expecting that side white accent to have momentarily turned off like all the other vehicles I’ve seen with them white LED’s. Probably because they’re not as bright as other ones? Right behind that ram pick up that I saw, there was a newer model Chrysler 300 that had those white LEDs that were much much brighter.

As far as whether or not those little lights are supposed to turn off when the transmission is in Park or not, that I don’t know. And as far as whether not having the headlights on, it’s supposed to turn those off, I don’t know on that either.

On my 18, when I had the DRL’s activated and my projector headlights, basically my orange LED strips are my DRL‘s. The only time they turn on is when I don’t have my headlights on. And if I go out there and start the truck with the headlights off, have a transmission in Park, the lights don’t go into DRL mode until I take it outta park.

I sure wish mine had that option to turn mine off. What year is your truck? Mine didn’t come with the drls, I had to have my activated at the dealer but there’s no option in that same screen on mine to turn them off at will.

He's got a 2017. Pretty sure he activated his through the AlfaOBD software like I did. I also have the menu option in my 2014.

That’s what I was thinking, was that on 17’s and under that whether you use that thing you mentioned, or even simply having the dealership do it that, you’ll have the option to turn them off on your own as well and that the 18s don’t....

No I am fairly certain 2018 owners who activated their DRL using Alfa have the menu option as well.

To my knowledge any year Ram with dealer activated DRL don’t get the menu option.

Correct mines a 2017, I used the alfaobd to get that screen. Just another example of what’s available in your truck that’s not activated.

That’s weird, I wonder why when you have it activated at the dealer that you don’t get the menu option to turn it off?

The light strips aren't drl's. Just there for looks. The drl's are actually the low beam leds. Those can be enabled and disabled in the menu screen. Regardless the light strips will stay on There's probably only a couple of watts going to them and they will probably outlast the truck.

Your DRL’s.... are they the amber turn signal strips, or are they the lowbeams on an even lower wattage?

That’s weird, when I told the dealer I wanted the DRL’s activated, the sales code they inputted, turned on the orange led strips in my headlights. They only come on like that when the headlights are off, and when the transmission isn’t in Park when the ignition on. There’s also other vehicles that have the same lights for drls as well. I didn’t think it had to be a lower form of the lowbeams. Kinda glad it isn’t.

I know, and I apologize for the slight thread derailment but I’m just curious since we did start talking about that.

There are certain times you don't want any exterior illumination, hunting for one. The low beam headlights are the DRL and are activated through the Uconnect settings, giving the operator a choice. Apparently with these lights there is no choice.

Please don't post here unless you have a 5th Gen (2019) or have knowledge of the lighting issue I am describing. 2018 and previous year lighting is not relevant to this discussion.

I understand what you're saying, however, your 'lights-off" need is likely a SMALL part of the market and therefor likely either overlooked or irrelevant to the designers. If there is no option for turning them off with the vehicle software then you the only choices left are old school solutions, cover them up, install a switch in the circuit, or pull a fuse.

This is exactly why I haven't been as active on this site This 5th Gen area keeps getting corrupted with older generation stuff.

Corrupted?....lol. I’m not a bettin’ man but if I had to guess, I’d say the lack of 5th Gen info might just be due to the fact that this new generation of trucks isn’t quite as popular yet...
