Would you buy a new 5th gen ram with the new tech on it? Heat exchanger system that mechanically heats the diffs and trannies, eTorque mild hybrid system, electric e brake, electronic lockers, and all the other stuff that comes with 4 gens such as shifter nobs, mds, vvt etc etc. Keep in mind I assume we all are truck guys, so assuming you have to buy a truck, if not ram then what? Or would you fix up an old truck? Does all this new tech make you nervous for longevity? Do you prefer to have options whether or not you get all of these features, like a model that didn't have tech on it and was bare bones truck like we had in the 60's and 70's?

Definitely. It's the only new truck out there I like. Had 2 titans, don't care for the new ones. Never liked ford. Used to like Chevy, don't like what they're doing lately. Toyota...overpriced and outdated

While I think they look generic as far as the grill I'm ok with that, not fond of it but Ok. I really like the new interior. Not so much the hybrid or the heated diffs.

You need to add :

I would buy another NEW 4th gen

After all the **** with my 1500, at 140,000 miles I am keeping it for my kiddo who is a barrel racer and doubled down on an ‘18 CTD 2500.
Neither Ford or Chevy even got a sniff. When I decided to buy I started with local dealers who wanted me to ‘come on over and check out our lot’ but no effort to find the truck I was actually ASKING for. Anyway, a $76 flight to Denver, a $36 shuttle and $86 Marriott in Golden, CO was a small price to pay for the truck I wanted and thee price I liked. Jason and Dominic at Christopher’s in Golden were awesome to work with.

I personally: Really like the style & profile of my 2017 HD2500!
Compared to the newer models.

Not a fan of all the new mechanical systems being added to aid in cooling or emissions control! Just adds more cost & reliability issues.

I was lucky enough to find & pick my 2017 HD2500 with every option I wanted/needed except electronic lockers in the front/rear as well as full LED lighting.

Many mods are planned for my 2017 to aid in towing performance as well as exterior appearance.
Plan is to have The JUDGE paid in full with not even 20K miles on her & Still looking like New.
Then spend hours towing the new family 5th wheel all over the state & being apart of my many years of retirement.

She has spent m
ost of her time for the first year in the cozy comfort of the garage - since I have been blessed with a company WK truck.
She is only driven sparingly on days off.

You left out an option - I just bought mine six months ago, and I intend to drive it until the Odo hits 100k or greater... I want to squeeze every last dime of value out of the thing before I think of buying another one.

Now if my missus wants a truck of her own, well...

While I really don't want tech for tech's sake, one of my only vices in life is I Iove to buy a new truck now and then. I don't like all the nanny devices, and I have no use for rain sensing wipers, or automatic headlights, or other superfluous ********. At the same time, I spent years keeping old stuff running, and it may sound romantic, and it's a fun hobby, but old stuff is old stuff. Besides, drive a new Cummins with Aisin, then tell me what mid-seventies pickup can pull my gooseneck like that.

I'd put money down that the next COMPLETE 5th gen heavy duty won't have the gimmicky heated diff

If I was getting a newer truck (2019), I'd still go with Ram. I just think it's the best value for the money compared to the competition. That said, all the new tech in these trucks (and the overall direction that the auto industry is going in, for that matter) makes me nervous. My 2015 Lone Star/Big Horn with the nicer EVIC, backup camera, Bluetooth, and parking sensors is about as much tech as I ever want in a truck. Features like that are practical but not overboard in my opinion. All the tech on the 5th Gen -- everything already mentioned plus things like self-park, etc. -- just seems like way too much to me. A lot of this technology is just not necessary, and I think it could definitely affect longevity/reliability. My brother has an 08 Ram, and one of the things I like about his truck is the simplicity.

I think early 4 gens are a good balance of not spastic new tech but good performance and comfort. I'd buy an old truck before a new one, but I'll drive this thing as long as I can.

I'm planning on keeping my 14 Ram QC 4X4 for a long time , no telling what will be available 10+ years from now .

Knowing what I know now , would I have bought my truck . Yes , but I would've gotten a CC with the 8speed and 3.92 diffs [emoji1303]

me too cc and 3.92's, and the only one of those I can do anything about is getting the 3.92's. That would make the 6 speed tolerable. maybe some day...

I'm not so sold on the 8 speed anymore.

I'm not sure. My 06 was the least reliable truck I've ever owned by miles. Regardless of that because I got so much more truck for the money I bought another in 2011 that has been my most reliable ever and my favorite truck ever. Bought a replacement in 2017 that I wont drive too far from home because its had 3 break downs in its 3140km life so 2 bad ones out of 3 and the new ones priced similar to the other big domestics. Not saying no, but it may be a hard sell. If I put some miles on the 17 and it turns out the bugs are all worked out the odds will improve.

The main reason I'd want the 8 speed is because I like the way it shifts and down shifts in the wife's 16 Challenger . The first 3 gear ratios are lower than my 6 speed which would help get the truck going with 35"+ tires this is also why I'd like the 3.92 diffs [emoji1303]
I do like the simplicity of fluid change and having a dipstick on my 6 speed though .

I hate the no dipstick thing. I think manufacturers do it to keep people from checking it wrong and overfilling. My brother had a 3 series bmw and just thought when it said low oil he had to add a litre. Turned out not to be enough and melted the engine. Being an awd and a huge job to motor swap its now scrap. If it had a dipstick he would have filled it to the high mark and still be driving it.
