So, I'm getting ready to do this and I'm getting mixed info. I purchased a complete steering wheel (not just the inserts). Will I need the harness to get it to work? 2014 Ram Express. Also, the instructions say to disconnect the battery but the videos say that the steering wheel needs to be moved to get to each of the clips....did people leave the battery hooked up while removing the clips but disconnected it prior to actually disconnecting the airbag?

Not sure about the harness, maybe someone else can answer that. When I installed the audio controls, I disconnected the battery before removing any of the clips. Not sure if it's safe to remove the clips with the airbag powered. Could be dangerous.

So you were able to reach all 3 airbag clips without turning the steering wheel? I guess I can just go looks, lol.

No, I had to turn the wheel. It can be done with the battery cable off. Did you get the airbag removal tool? Definately worth the $

I jacked up the front until the front tires was just touching a bit providing just enough friction to not turn freely . This way the wheel is easy to turn and the 3ea clips become easily available ....I put my phone on the reverse cam and use it as a mirror . The air bad was off in less than 20 seconds !

Hope this helps !

You'll want to disconnect the battery or pull the horn and airbag fuses before trying to get at the clips.
With battery disconnected, key in run you can turn the wheel, just needs a bit of effort.
For audio controls you don't need need harness. To get heated you need clock spring, harness, switches, seats, and a programmer.
I found a small brake spoon worked well to remove the airbag clips.

I just did this upgrade on my 2015 ED Tradesman. Went to Oreilly's and got the $16 Performance Tools W80651 steering wheel puller and PT W942 hook/pic set. I tried a couple of the picks and the one of the L ones worked really easy to pop the Air Bag clips off. I didn't disconnect my battery (any of the three times) but I did have my key off when working on the air bag. Probably should have disconnected the battery. I used my S9+ front facing camera sitting on the steering wheel column (there is a little notch on the top that helps it not slide down) in front of the EVIC display and it worked perfect to see what I was doing. I was able to turn the steering when ok on pavement and crushed rock to get each clip towards the top.
One thing to note is that all the videos show taking off the bottom kick panel and the lower steering panel. You only need to take off the top column panel by removing the two torx screws on the bottom ends. I also found it easier to put the screws back in the top panel with the steering wheel off (you only need the top off to get to the air bag clips.

Screwed up my clock spring setting, even though I tried to be careful. Put the new steering wheel on with just the center bolt loose and drove around. Popped it off, rotated a couple notches, pushed on slightly until I felt it was straight. Used a sharpie to mark the left and top to make it easier (when I did this a the third time to fix clock spring) to realign it.

For the clock spring, I did the all the way left, all the way right, count and divide trick. With the steering wheel off, I cranked the truck, foot on brake and put it in reverse. I was able to verify the clock spring was in the middle using my reverse camera lines and noting when it was straight. The wires should be at the top and the nub on the bottom (assuming your wheels are straight) when your lines are in the middle (and the divide in half trick).

Something to note when I had the clock spring off a rotation, my traction control light was on. After re-centering, it took me driving about 3-4 blocks for the light to go off. Originally I was getting worried because it didn't go off right away.

Yeah, leave it alone, don't touch it. I didn't have an issue with it at all. Never touched it, didn't have to reset.

There is a little hole on the top of it. I cut a wire coat hanger in a strait piece about 4 inches in length and stuck it in so it wouldn't move.

- Use a steering wheel puller to get it started if needed
-Leave the nut on the last thread or two so it doesn't break loose completely when you do pull it free.
- mark the wheel/shaft with a sharpie for center before removal (once center bolt is out).
- take it off with the wheels/wheel oriented straight ahead
- pay attention to the orientation tab/nub of the clockspring where it's inserted into the wheel near the button when removing and try not to touch/rotate it.

Probably one of the easiest upgrades I've done. Putting those damn wires back in the steering wheel took me longer than anything. That's one time having big hands is a PITA.

the kit from allMopar parts comes with the switches pre installed in bezel. It also comes with 2 switches with harness. So you get 2 extra switches..

Or you can order a pre-owned wheel with everything installed on eBay for a lot cheaper. And easier install.

Great advice and exactly what I did. I was able to find a pre-owned wheel with audio controls on the back, but it was also leather wrapped and had the "VR" and "Phone" buttons on the front of the wheel. Cost was $125 shipped.

The leather wrapped wheels are harder to find on ebay, but you can find a non-leather wrapped with audio controls for well under $100 shipped.

Hi guys, I called the dealer and asked them if the steering wheel audio controls could be added to my 2014 ram. After checking my VIN they said the harness was unable to support these options and that’s the only info they would give me. When I asked them if it was just the wiring harness in the steering wheel or if it was the main wiring harness they could not give me an answer and said you can’t do it. I’ve read through about 20 pages on this thread and was wondering if anyone could let me know if this will work with my truck.

Thanks!

Yes it will absolutely work. Many people have done this to their 13-18 ram without issue.
Reach out to forum vendor @AllMoparParts.com (Benny) for a complete kit to use with the op.

Maybe @cgeorgemo can get the link for the kit in the op fixed (may need a moderator to unlock the op)

Unfortunately your dealer is [emoji817]% wrong .

This is a simple little kit to install , just follow what Mpgrimm2 said above [emoji1360][emoji1360]
