So I purchased a 2019 Ram Big Horn Crew Cab with the 5.7l two weeks ago. We love the truck overall but ran into one stupid issue and we are wondering if it's just us.

We live in Northern Ontario Canada and regularly see -30 deg temps this time of year. Due to that we are AVID users of engine block heaters. We have an electrical post setup in the driveway on a timer and plug in every night before bed. Well I went to plug in our 2019 Ram equipped with a block heater (as always) and what do we find? The wire is too short. Like laughably too short.

Normally the block heater plug\wire can be routed through the engine safely and come out above the headlight with about 2-3" to spare so you can easily plug in. Well the 2019 one BARELY makes it to the airbox! It can't be accessed from outside the truck anywhere. So that means if we want to plug in at night we need to go outside, pop the hood (which is ice\snow covered) and leave the hood popped with an extension cord fed into the engine compartment.

This also means our remote start won't trigger because the hood is popped, so we are forced to choose between cold starting an engine in -30 (as cold as -50 some days) or plugging in and rendering our remote start useless.

Anyone else finding this or did my dealer install the wrong block heater?

For what it may be worth, the power cord of the block heater of my 2010 also was very short and did not reach outside the engine compartment. Which required popping the hood and plugging in an extension cord just as you described.
You can enable your remote start, however, by closing the hood (but not all the way down) so you are left with about half an inch clearance to route the cable through. The ECU still regards that as a closed hood (again, on my 2010) and remote start works.

Thanks for the tip, I also worry that having an extension cord (that is removable) under the hood is just asking to catch in a pulley\belt at some point. Plus convincing my wife to pop the hood, plug it in, make sure it's clear and safe of the belt, and sorta-close-it will be a...hassle.

Maybe I'll give Ram a call today and have someone explain to me why they designed it in a way that doesn't seem to be meant for use.

I've owned a 2008 (TRX4 5.7), 2012 (Outdoorsman 5.7), and 2014 (Outdoorsman 5.7) Ram, all had cords that could be routed over the headlight during the winter months for easy plugging.

Can you post a photo of the block heater module? You could probably re-wire it with longer leads.

Hey, no doubt I could do that, I already considered some options to extend it. What I want to be careful of is that it's a truck with only 500miles on the ODO and I don't want to void any warranty items.

Yes, you absolutely can rewire the heater with an extension. It is just 110 alternating current. Just be sure to use silicone or heat shrink connectors and strap the cord to a harness or what have you so it is secure.

Had engine block heaters in most of my trucks in my snowplowing days. Not sure about the 2019 but most cords plug into the heater element. If it is removeable get a cord for a Diesel that is longer and route to the front.

If you have the tow hooks on the front of the truck, see if you can re-route the block heater cord out that. That where mine on my EcoD is routed to, and I have it zip tied to the hook to keep it from falling down. I can tuck it in the bumper so it's out of sight when not in use but easily pulled back out.
Check Kat's for a possible longer heater cord. http://www.fivestarmanufacturing.com/kat_s

Get a flat 3 lead extension cord 6-9 feet long, plug it to the block heater cord secure it under the hood bring a few inches out from the hood to plug in your posts lead to.
