Installed a coolant heater. When I removed the plug on the bottom of the engine block to install the heater hose fitting no coolant came out. Thought for a moment I pulled the wrong plug but turns out it was just clogged up with sediment. Now with the heater installed it should start it when it gets below zero.
my 81 with a holley never had an issue starting below 0. i have a feeling i may be dropping the carb back on on the next warm day because the fitech seems like it is junk. haven't been able to get my truck started since Saturday not for a lack of trying. came close a few time when boosting it with the 89 but no dice.

i did change the battery in the 89 today. the old battery is a ok summer battery but just didn't have enough to start a v8 when it is 0*f. my spare battery had no problem doing the job even after just sitting in my dads ford for the last few months. he can have my old interstate battery from my RC. it has got to be 10+ year old but still seems in pretty decent shape. definitely not bulging like it has be frozen.

Well good luck with yours, I'll try starting mine tomorrow when it warms up a bit.

My '80 with the slant six wouldn't start in the bitter cold either. Put a coolant heater on her and then it was fine.

i am hoping to get it swapped back over to carb this weekend if it is warm enough. had a tire jump off the 89 and it is still making a clunking noise so i think might have a bad universal joint or something going on.

I'm sorry to hear that. I know a bunch of guys on the chevelle forum that are liking their fitech. You think it's a mopar compatibility issue? you're making me second guess going with fitech.

i really don't know if it is a mopar compatibility issue or a fitech issue. it was running ok but has been hard to start when cold but this saturday that just passed it was running very lean on and off to the point it was barely running so i am pretty sure the issue is with the fitech but it has been too cold out to even try messing with it. it has been about 0*f for the last couple days and the fitech not working has forced me to use my 89 and even with a bad fuel pump the 89 still runs better than the fitech setup. i am temped to get an adapter to put a dodge TBI setup on my 81. i am pretty sure i got nearly everything from my old 91 except for a oxygen sensor.

i got my 81 running with the fitech and it almost seems back to normal but hopefully it will start better tomorrow. it was completely miserable to get started today. had to boost/charge it using my 89 and the big battery charger and it still struggled to get going. sent fitech off some log files and some video and hope someone will be able to point me in the right directions. it is frustrating. i really want it to work but it feels like it is fighting me all the way.

Wow, that was one hard start! I'd be thinking about putting the old carb back on as well.

Got mine started yesterday. Plugged it in for about 45 min, turned the key and after three very slow turns of the engine it fired right up. Just have a small leak I need to fix.

it started a lot better today than it did yesterday so i really not sure what to do. hoping it might stay that way. still got to add a bit more cranking fuel but i knew it would need that but can't get it adjusted right if you can't get it running. maybe the computer or an injector froze or somethings. i am hoping i can get this thing dialed in. i really want it to work so i can justify buying one for the elcamino or swapping it over.

look into the ****** for you elco. supposed to be less fussy, preferred by the chevelle/elco crowd.

i don't know if i would be quite ready to spend holley ****** money. the starting price on them is definitely more than fitech. might almost be cheaper to get a new motor/fuel injections system. the carb on the elcamino does work good other than engine being very slow to start especially if it isn't started often.

slow progress on my build but did get somethings done. 20190126_144535.jpg 20190215_160136.jpg bent some new brake lines to my rear disc conversion. had to hand bend them, someone was kind enough to relieve me of my tubing benders. luckily they didn't get my flaring tool.

then got my gas tank mounted.

After reading 3000 or more posts about oil I decided on this combo

looks good. at least break lines are easy to bend by hand. i know this is likely not as big of an issue in you neck of the woods but usually i run rubber line from the sending unit to the front of the tank in the frame. that way you can replace the steel line if you ever needed to without having to take the bed off or dropping the tank. plus it might look a tiny bit cleaner if done that way.

with heat and the ethanol gas, I have the opposite issue compared to you I think. I'm trying to eliminate as much rubber line as possible. ran 3/8 hard line from the tank to the engine bay. 5/16 hard line return to the tank. the tank to hard line connnections are all accessible from under/in front of the wheel well. bent the lines in a way so I could do this. looks 'messy' and a bit tight, but accessible. btw, all rubber lines are not installed yet in the pic.

up here we usually have to deal with lines rusting out and need to be replaced. heat and ethanol shouldn't effect things if you are going fuel injected on the truck. i don't think you would really see that much cooling difference running steel vs rubber. my 93 had copper line on it used as fuel line when i first bought it but then again there was 2 or 3 bad brake lines just sitting in the frame because someone was too lazy to remove them.
