I,m just wondering if I should get a cover gasket for the rear 9 1/4 in my 1500 ram, or just use black rtv? Thanks all.

I've used both and either way haven't had an issue.

If you use a gasket, use something like Permatex 1 which dries hard. Perm1 works as a sealer which works with the gasket. It is not recommended that you use silicone gasket maker with a gasket.
The disadvantage to Perm 1 is that you have to scrape it good when removing it. It glues the gasket to the mounting surfaces and the gasket tears apart if you remove the cover. But it is a permanent seal.

If you use silicone, don't use black. Permatex sells a silicone gasket maker designed specifically to seal in differential lubricants. Mopar also sells it.
The stuff works great.

Ive used the ultra black before (today in fact) but im also much pickier about changing fluids often and probably change it significantly earlier than most. I also had it on hand already though i don't recommend using it.

The permatex diff specific stuff is much better suited though. I dont like gaskets for the very reason Okie outlined: gotta scrape it off. Big thing with silicone is follow the directions on when to re-add fluids and re-enter the vehicle into service

Just did mine a week or so ago. It had the sealant and I went back with a gasket. So far so good, but I'm going to put a mag-hytec cover on soon, which has a reusable rubber gasket built in, which is by far the best, IMO.

I just changed mine and put on a felpro gasket for the 2nd time. I prefer it to the sealant that came from the factory as there is no mess to clean the mating surfaces. I don't permatex the gasket, Heavy wheelbearing grease to hold it in place and bolt it down. Never had a leak in 190,000 miles. Gasket is about 6.50 from oreilly's. The synthetic oil about 30, and the friction modifier about 9 I believe. It totals out to about $50.
