Did the first oil change on the 5.7L at 4600 miles by myself over the weekend. Didn’t want to wait any longer with the weather. Didn’t need to jack up the truck. Oil drain plug was very easy to get to. The oil filer was a different story. The locating was kinda tight to get the filter out. Most of the oil from the filter drained all over the cross member and sway bar. I had to use an oil filter wrench to get it off. No big deal.

I was at Walmart and they didn’t have any Wix oil filters. They had Mopar and Fram TG but decided to go with the Mobil1 M1-113A $10. I also picked up 2, 5 quarts jugs of 5w20 Quaker State Ultimate Durability. $20 each. I know its not full synthetic like the $40 5qrt jug of Royal Purple. The truck took 7.25 quarts and had half a jug left for the next change. Also had to get a 10qrt oil catch basin for $9.

Noticed right away difference how smooth the engine became. Exhaust sounded different too. I reset the 40% maintenance minder. Total cost $50 for oil change and $9 oil catch basin.

Sounds good, glad you found what works. You may want to use rhino ramps, makes it much easier. Also, next time put a bag around the oil filter when it starts dripping. Also, these are good not only for changing oil but doing brake work or anything that is easier when you jack up the truck. It is a jack and a stand allinone. Read my filter page in my sig, but m1 is a very good filter, it's a blend much better then just paper.

I keep forgetting to use the zip lock bag trick. I have a 3ton floor jack I didn’t use. That saved me a lot of time not having to jack up the truck and place jack stands. Yes, I read your oil filter thread and its very informative. That’s why I picked the M1. Thanks for the write up.

I can’t believe you waited so long to change it for the first time. I would never let break in oil go to 4600 miles. Every new vehicle I’ve ever bought, I’ve done the first oil change at about 1,000 miles. The second at 4,000 total on the odometer (3k after the first one), and every 4,000 miles after that. I would never dream of relying on the vehicle’s oil change sensor to tell me when to change it.

I agree with you with the pre-assembly lube and brake in oil, I should have done it sooner. I never go by the MM anyways. I keep a hand written log of all the oil changes. Like my other cars, I change the oil myself as much as I can. Weather permitting and if I have the time. I know what oil I am putting in and not any drum oil form the dealer or shop. Since the Ram is new, I would like to do all the oil changes myself.

Guess I am the bad guy that didn't have the time until 7k. Filter was super tight from factory but a big mess later - and it came off.

Does anyone know for a fact the engine is delivered with the break in oil? A lot of engines today are ran on a Dyno with the break in oil at the factory then switched to regular oil before it leaves the factory.

I've never heard of such a thing. I think my new truck had 6 or 12 miles on the OD when I drove it off the Lot. Highly doubt they ran breakin oil for 6 miles and then dump it.

Just ordered my oil, now to figure out the tools

Thankfully, my friends can help me though. Also, don't forget to use a ziplock bag when taking off the filter to make things easier

I’m talking before the motor goes in the truck. I had to get a new motor on a previous car and asked about changing out the break in oil. The dealer confirmed with the factory they run the engines some (out of the car) and then put in regular oil. It wasn’t a ram though, which is why I am asking if anyone knows for sure it’s break in oil.

I find that interesting; it make sense tho. I would love to get a behind the scenes on a Ram assembly plant.

13mm wrench and small oil filter wrench. Order 5w20 PUP (Pennzoil Ultra Premium) from Walmart delivered for about $24.97 per 5qt jug. 7 quarts needed and get Wix premium filters from Rockauto #57060XP for $6.62 each. Can't do much better than that. Also heard factory fill is semi-synthetic. Owners manual states never use regular oil.

Fantastic oil choice; that PUP is good stuff.

Gotta love Pup

I'm just waiting to hear back from my friend where I'm taking my truck, either his job or his house
