Well, I just found this thread 5 minutes after ordering a set of 5” Black tips and a Borla muffler. If the black tips are just reworked from a bad batch I don’t think I want them. Not worth the worry.
Tom, there were only a few sets of these that were sandblasted and powder coated. Every black tip that we’ve sold for the past 2 months has been brand new inventory. We no longer purchase from the manufacturer that we received the bad batch of stainless tips from.

Thanks Matt. If anyone doubts the customer service level at Moe’s, he handled it perfectly within 8 hours of my middle of the night email WHILE he is on vacation!

After seeing those gloss tips, I may rethink my choices again. I was going to save a little and get the full Borla Cat Back but their black tips are satin. Moe’s gloss tips would perfectly match my tuck.

No worries at all. The gloss tips are done by request, so they do take a couple days to complete. The matte finish tips are kept in stock and ready to ship daily.

Something I just thought about, how durable is the black coating? I occasionally take my truck to the desert and run off road. I realize that the majority of abuse will be on the bottom of the tips where nobody will see, just wondering.

That's it. Just put Gloss Black in the notes, and I'll take care of it.

They are sandblasted and powderoated, so it is a durable coating. I would not go with gloss black if you use the truck offroad as the gloss finish will scratch easier. That is the main reason why most exhaust tips have a matte black finish.

The tips are coated internally and externally correct?

I don’t have Moe’s 5” tips but I do have the Carven ones and mine are rusting already also.

Ive just come to terms that you cant stop this in the winter if you live in a state that salts the roads. The tips on my 3 month old $1000 Borla catback have rust on them, and I live in South Texas with no salt on the roads. Had a customer in here last week with the $800 Magnaflow catback that was on the truck for 8 months, and his tips were completely gold and faded with no shine to them anymore at all. Carven and Moe's Bolt on 5" tips have randomly had rust spots pop up on them. All MBRP tips seem to rust quickly, even their black coated tips. All of these are 304 stainless, but the salt just destroys them if not washed weekly. I wish there was a better answer but every manufacturer has to go through this in the winter months. Best thing you can do to prevent it is wash them every week, and polish them once or twice a year. I know that can be tough when its cold and wet outside, but it is the only way to keep polished stainless tips looking new.

To be honest I figured they would rust just not that quick. This winter has sucked big-time for snow and ice so lots of salt. I am going to wait until spring and see how well they clean up and see if any type of cleaning product will slow it down in the winter.

I’m just going to pull mine as my new exhaust I ordered with black tips. My Carven ones will be polished and up for sale.

I have the Mufflex 5" tips. I've had them on the truck for over a year now, two winters, and they look brand new! just my .02
