what are people’s thoughts on Chrysler not honoring factory warranty on vehicles first sold in Canada??!! Seems a little shady to me! I was not happy to find this out about my 16 ram 1500 EcoDiesel.

Found this out the hard way... I was not happy with the certified pre owned Chrysler dealer I purchased the vehicle from.

Thing is I didn’t know until I sat down to do paperwork? After test drive after haggling on price etc... I almost walked but unfortunately I didn’t! So here I am praying any issue that arises is minor! Not too comforting.

The really sad part is that I don’t think I got an “amazing”deal! $35,900 for a 16 EcoDiesel Laramie Ltd with 28k miles.

I lucked out. My '16 Outdoorsman was originally used by Enterprise Canada. By their rules since it was a fleet vehicle and had the option to change from metric to standard on the dash, I was able to register the warranty. Seems like a weird situation but my the dealer I took it to for my second go and all the recalls is one I trust. He spent almost 30 mins going through all the steps to make sure my warranty was good.

According to the VIN, my truck was made for Canada as well. Im assuming that means it was originally sold in Canada.

But all the instruments, including the plastic, speedo numbers, are in miles.

Is that normal, id think in a Canadian truck, at least the hardware numbers are in miles.

At least, the miles are large numbers, around the outside of the speedo. Its still has the little kph numbers around the inside.

I pretty sure there’s a bunch of country-based laws and various other legal hoops between the countries that prevent Canadian trucks from being warrantied in US. I read something that explained it a while back but don’t remember where it was. Possibly on this site.

It is well known about warranty and Canadian trucks. Makes no sense to me.

It does insofar as liability - the VIN was made for and sold in Canada, which has its own safety and manufacturing regulations, which differs from US safety and manufacturing regulations.** Canada has its own lemon laws, its own traffic and driver safety laws, etc etc... so a Canadian truck, while it can be sold in the US, isn't warrantied due to those reasons.

Same with US trucks sold in Canada, I suspect (could be wrong on that - it sounds about right, but I'm more than happy to be corrected if anyone knows differently.)

** I'm not saying that either one is better than the other - in fact they're very similar. I am saying however that they differ, and that fact does have bearing on legal liability.

My truck is made in US but was first sold in Canada so when they look up warranty info it shows kilometers there for it’s recognized as Canadian car and US doesn't honor warranty. I was told under certain circumstances a vin can be migrated to US? I called customer care and told them I needed to migrate my vin to US they had me send them my bill of sale and registration now I’m waiting to see if they migrate it??? Hopefully they do. I’ll will update if it works

Good luck with getting that fixed. Sure seems silly that they'd make such a stink. It's not like you bought it in Europe.

On a bright note, I believe if you ever run out of gas, you can dump a couple can's of LaBatt's or Molson's into the tank and it'll get you to the fuel station....The only real issue I have with CA vehicles is when you make a wrong turn the GPS Nav will berate you like a Canadian.. "I said turn left you Hoser. Take off eh".

** NOTE ** Apologies if I offended any Canadians. The entirety of my knowledge of your great country comes from Bob and Doug MacKenzie.

The same warranty problem exists here in Canada with trucks originally sold in the USA. They all have the same computers. Changing from miles to Kilometers is a flick of a switch. It's in the manual. Daytime running lights mandatory in Canada are the only difference in laws and that is also a flick of a switch.

Difference is 2 separate companies sell the trucks.
FCA Canada
FCA America

In my opinion it's weasel accounting that the warranties are not reciprocating. Same factory. Same parts. Same suppliers. Same driving conditions in northern US.
But easier and cheaper for the 2 companies not to offer a shared warranty.

I think there could be another reason for not honoring the warranty cross border and it has more to do with maximizing revenue. For example a Ram 1500 Tradesman is offered for 34095 on the Canada website and $31795 on the US website. In US dollars the Canada truck sells for $25571. The Canada truck would need to sell for $42393 (Canadian) to be equal price to the US model. So what FCA is trying to do is discourage dealers from buying the less expensive Canadian trucks (in US dollars) and importing them to the US. FCA would get less revenue per truck if this became widespread. I used to work for a major computer manufacturer that had similar policies, except usually overseas dealers wanted to buy US computers since they were half the price in the US compared to their local market.

Well Canada about a 20 minute drive for me. I'd take it to a dealer there if that's an option for you.

Correct. Technically, for tax reasons Chrysler Canada is an entirely different company. Many companies are the same way.

But whoever sold you the vehicle should've informed you about that, and if they didn't they are unethical in my opinion.

Definitely a revenue thing but the consumer ends up losing in the end and ultimately FCA is going to begin to lose customers. I only find out at the financing stage of the sale not told by sales agent. When I walked out of the finance guys office the sales guy began to tell me that the individual deals had the option to honor it or not and that most smaller dealers will honor it because they need the warranty work. This information was why I continued with the purchase. It turns out they used to be able to do warranty work but not anymore.
