I just purchased a 1997 ram 1500 with a 5.2 and got a copy of the equipment listing from the dealer. IT shows that I have the towing package and heavy duty cooling package. Anyone know exactly what those added to the truck? I plan to use it to tow my travel trailer and I am going through everything on it and replacing the cooling system components, brake lines and brake components, trans lines and anything questionable that couple decrease safety and dependability. I have my own shop and will perform all the work myself, just want to know all the components. This is my first dodge truck, I usually am a chevy guy but I got this truck cheap and it is in relatively good condition with a strong drivetrain. Any yes I already did a quick google search as well as a search on here with no results for 2nd gen tow packages.

Don't quote me on this, but should include an added Trans cooler behind AC Condenser, and the hitch along with "factory wiring" for the trailer lights and possibly a brake controller.

Check those trans lines especially up front, bypass the radiator trans cooler and block it off, remove the check valve on the trans cooler line near front of truck by radiator, and if want to truly be over the top add an in line filter for trans fluid.

I personally had a 3500 v10 tow truck with auto trans, Blew a line and a few thousand miles later (after fixing the line and changing fluid) the trans went to no reverse or o/d.

DodgeTx why do you recommend blocking off the trans cooler, because it’s not needed with the added trans cooler behind the AC condenser?

There is a reason Dodge has 2 coolers with the towing package. Do NOT by-pass any of them.
