Hello,

I scooped up a 2015 1500 Outdoorsman last fall with the intent of mounting my 2010 Western Midweight plow to it. Before purchasing I spoke with a Western rep and he said the truck will handle it fine, and people are mounting the older Midweights to these trucks without issue despite their site claiming it's overweight by like, 50lbs. I'm not worried about that, I do very light plowing for my parents and myself.

Anywho, I'm just curious if anyone has firsthand experience with mounting an UltraMount plow. My concerns are:

1. Electric power steering
2. Mount clearance - Is removal of the front air dam/lip good enough or required?
3. Power delivery/alternator - I've read some people get low voltage warnings, which wouldn't surprise me.

Thanks for any feedback!

Is the tuck still under any warranty? I last recall that plows are specifically not allowed for 1500s per the manual.

you have to order the truck from the factory and tell them your going to use for plowing or your not covered under any factory warranty

Do they build the truck any differently if you do that? The manual warns about plows possibly causing damage or affecting crash sensors.

Having IFS instead of a solid front axle makes plowing with a ram 1500 a very poor decision, however if you do decide to plow with it at the very least upgrade your springs

I'm not concerned about warranty come next Winter. And it's light duty residential plowing and a Mid-Weight plow, not parking lots. Not a big deal. Last truck was an 05 Silverado 1500, IFS, and it's still plugging along fine at 227k miles.

The mount looks simple enough, and wiring I can figure out. I'm more curious about fitment and if anything needs to be cut or removed as it did on my last truck. That, and any charging/electrical system concerns like I mentioned.

Edit: Finally found an install instruction link that's not broken, so that addresses a few "what to cut" questions. - http://library.westernplows.com/westernplows/pdffiles/40979.02_011519.pdf

If you’re really set on doing it then I’ll strongly suggest stiffer springs/shocks upfront, ballast in the rear. The weight of the plow will have it hanging a mere 1-2” off the ground and one bad bump in the road and your whole front end is gone.

You will not need to cut anything to fit it. And I’m not sure on the electrical load of things

Again I’m just trying to look out for you and try to steer you away from doing this. Ram specifically says do not install a plow on a 1500 as they can cause your airbags to deploy on you when driving.

Definitely appreciate the looking out, and I'm certainly aware of the crash sensor thing - It was the same warning on my last setup. Like any reasonable truck owner, I take owner's manual warnings with a grain of salt. Like how you should disconnect the battery when adjusting tire pressure *sarcasm, but you know what I mean*

The local dealer I bought this truck from is also a Western vendor/installer. I picked the brain of the installer, and the only thing preventing them from wanting to do the install of my 2010 Midweight on this truck is because it was overweight by less than 50lbs. The current Western Midweight is just barely lighter and is installed often. I'm considering springs, we'll see.

But if you see a post from me come December about replacing airbags you can have the last laugh :p

Haha ill keep a lookout, I am from northern Ontario where we get snow like there is no tomorrow, I have seen first hand the damage done to ram 1500's with plows on them that's why I am so against it lol.
