Honestly it depends. Sometimes we see lifter failure on vehicles with less than 50,000km. The majority of chewed up cams we see though all have other 100,000km.

The 3.6 is still a great engine though. It had some teething issues with cylinder heads and cam phasers when it first came out, but long term reliability still seems pretty good. Makes great power, and has good economy.

Personally for me though, in a truck, I’d want the hemi.

In case you are unaware, tach tech is a Chrysler tech, great to have on the forum. I would listen to him over me. That being said I know quite a few folk with over 100000 miles in wranglers. No issues.

With as many 3.6 engines that are out there, the actually failure rate for the issues I mentioned is going to be extremely low. The most common issue was the cylinder heads which they actually extended the warranty on them to 10 years/250,000km for the affected years.

Thanks for letting me know. But yes, he did mention that he's a Chrysler tech.

I looked this up after it got mentioned here. It appears this was an issue back in 2011-2013 ish? Sometime around there, but it is now a resolved issue? Something with the cylinder heads on one side?

LOL.... maybe we should hit RAM/FCA up for exhaust bolt replacements with every oil change???

I’m wondering if they fixed this with the newer trucks. Maybe they should have made it a option when buying the truck [emoji16]

This issue is supposed to be resolved on the newer 3.6 engines. It was an issue with valve sealing. Carbon would build up on the valve seat and it would create a misfire.

Bicycles don't have any of these issues. It's a little tough to tow a boat on a bike but if you've ever seen what they do in China on a bike, you'd see it's entirely possible.:p

Honestly, Jim had it right on. Some vehicles will go 200K with nothing but oil changes, then the same make and model won't go 20K without blowing a head gasket. The later is rare and like all things that make good news, most don't affect you and I or anyone we know yet it still makes the news.

I don't care one way or the other, but I think we all know what he meant. We're talking trucks here. "Car" can sometimes be used as a generic term for automobile.

Exactly. We're talking TRUCKS here. this is a TRUCK forum. Cars are VERY different. What's next, referring to a bicycle as a motor bike?

Just wondering what year your friends engine is. 7 months to replace an engine they build hundreds of every day sounds like more to the story.
