My eds red worked “ok”
I think it was the acetone in it that softened it up quite a bit. Nothing actually removed it besides elbow grease though.
This gasket wasn’t cheap especially for a one time use but if it works well I’m going to use it every time. Got it from Nick I think it was like $27.
Nick said he’s used them quite a bit on differentials and some other things and has had great luck.
RTV versus Gasket, you see what Kyle thinks. RTV is great until you have to remove it, easily 27 dollars in labor removing the rtv. Lube Locker gasket users, let us know how these work.
Wow, awesome update thanks Kyle. So this is the first Ram Forum member with the metal thread and filter installed? I do have metal thread but oem as we hadn't found syn filters at that time.
Ok,

Ok,
Royal Purple spin on filter is in my trans along with a new sump filter and 8 1/2 quarts (+2 quart deep pan) of Redline C+ATF.
I’ll mention my original strategy again because it works so well with breaking the seal of the trans pan. There’s two spots on the front of the transmission pan that you can get good leverage to bust the sale. See pictures. Ron mentioned it in his 65 RFE thread as well. With the OEM pan I used a falling wedge because it had a nice round edge for the wedge to fit in between.
With myPML deep pan having a sharp corner I used a small flat crowbar and leveraged against the transmission housing and it popped right off.
Last year my truck went in for a recall and they had to drop the transmission pan. The ******** that put it back on I think he used a full tube of RTV. [emoji2959][emoji2959][emoji35][emoji35][emoji35][emoji35][emoji35][emoji35]He actually put it inside the bolt holes on the transmission housing. ALL OF THEM were PACKED full. And it all oozed out through the thru holes on the transmission pan. I spent over an hour cleaning off RTV.
When I took the OEM pan off it was much easier and maybe spent 20 minutes. Bottom line if you’re going to use RTV do it the right way. If you put a small amount in the right places you’re going to get a good seal. That RTV is going to squeeze down to less than the thickness of a piece of paper. Do it right and you don’t need much.
Place to leverage
Look at this RTV disaster [emoji35][emoji35][emoji35][emoji35]. Going to cut my filter’s open but I’m hoping none of that **** broke loose and is in my trans somewhere.

I ended up resorting to 27 caliber bore brush for the transmission pan holes and a 22 caliber for the transmission housing. The copper bristles pulled that **** out real well. Just be easy. Its all aluminum.
Last really important thing I want to mention for those that are going to use an aftermarket spin on filter with the metal adapter.
BE VER CARFUL THREADING THE FILTER INTO YOU HOUSING...
Be very easy with the threads. you are screwing steel threads into an aluminum housing. if you start the threads wrong in anyway and **** up your housing threads you’ve got yourself into a big mess. The set that I sold to everybody (i just used one) is a very tightly fitting thread. Good thing for a nice solid fitment but very easy to **** up when putting it on. There is absolutely no wiggle once you’ve got the thread started with this thing. It still turns nice and easy but there is zero play at all.
Now that I think about this this could be a reason that OEM uses plastic so you never **** up the housing.
As Mike mentioned I did not use RTV this time. I used a gasket made by LubeLocker. I posted this in the syn thread a few months ago when I bought it. I’m very pleased with the quality. They make gaskets for your diff covers to if you need them. The trans pan gasket looks to be a one time use and it is roughly $27. I got it from Nick. It’s an aluminum core with gasket material on both sides and three beads of sealant the entire perimeter.
Another new thing I tried this time. Instead of trying to be tedious and meticulous about wiping out my transmission pan and getting it nice and clean with Solvent and a rag... i took the easy route.
After I removed the RTV......I cut out a piece of cardboard laid it on my driveway set the transmission pan on it and went to town with a scrub brush Dawn soap and water. Super ******* easy. Rinsed it off gave it a nice towel dry.....DONE. I’ll do it like this every time now.

Good stuff! You beat me to it, work ****** up my plans of getting this done a couple of weeks ago. No problems getting the paint off the RP filter?
