Ive had a grinding sound in my front drivers side tire for a month or so. I figured it was a caliper/brake pad dragging or a bent dust shield. finally had the time to pull the tire this morning and couldnt figure out what it was, so I took it to a local repair shop. They charged me $500 for the front hub assembly, $285 for labor and $85 for an alignment. Total out the door was $942. This seemed like a lot, but needed it done as we've got a road trip tomorrow.

Googling a Moog hub assembly for my truck shows a price of $220 @ advanced auto, and videos look like it takes an hour or 2 for an average guy to swap. Did I get taken for a ride?

Im considering doing the front passenger side myself as im sure its not far behind its counterpart.

I don't understand the wheel alignment part. That wasn't necessary unless they were replacing steering components.

Bearer of bad news and all that jazz.... yeah, that's not what I'd call a fair price... arguably not for the labor... definitely not for the part cost unless THEY bought an OEM from the dealership AND added their mark up. DIY, or buy the part and have a trusted mechanic do it. Hr tops for a competent mechanic.

The one great thing about most dodge trucks and SUVs since early 2000's is the ease of replacing the hubs.. no bearings to press any longer typically 3 bolts and a little time and you got yourself some new wheel bearings and hubs.

Again hate to see our fellow ram owners taken for a ride but..seems you went on one in this instance...sorry for your luck..

Sounds like I over paid. Had I known for sure it was a bearing, I would have done research and probably done the work myself. Live and learn.

Mine went out in my 2500. Was $500 OTD no alignment needed. That’s oem and dealer doing it.

Yikes. Yeah, I would not use that shop again. Their cost for the part was probably ~$250 and almost $300 for labor? I'm assuming they charge $80-100/hr and that $85 "alignment" maybe didn't include an hour's worth of labor charge? Not only that, like said, an alignment didn't need to be done unless they had to tweak something related to that in the knuckle dropping process.

Regardless, nothing is cheap to have done to your vehicles. I know I've paid anywhere from $300-500 to have wheel bearings done on Ford and Hyundai products. I had a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe AWD where I paid to have 2 replaced at different times to the tune of $500/ea. When a 3rd started howling I traded it in. LOL!

Well since no one else has posed the question - what was the mileage your truck had when the wheel bearing started growling?

Mine started around 78k.

Truck was hit in the passenger front rim at 57k and finally started making noise at 78k. I replaced the driver side because of how cheap the part was. Why not??

Truck also has maxtrac 7" lift kit since 28k miles.

Just replaced passenger side bearing, my son, a mechanic did it in his driveway amid swarming blackflies! His cost for part was $150, but it wasn’t the easiest to do, back of bolts are hard to reach and it calls for removal of ball joint, tie rod and axle shaft, he managed to get her done right though, 140,000 kms

Why would you have to remove a ball joint??...Maybe you mean separate a ball joint...

Shops like that are why I never take my vehicles anywhere. They take advantage of people and the more your back is against the wall the more they screw you. There are good shops out there for sure but there's also alot that aren't. Timken on Rock Auto for $85 so you paid about $900 too much. I can see rationalizing paying $100-200 too much because you were in a pickle but there's just no way to rationalize having it stuck to you that bad.
I know karma and all so not sure I'd actively hope for it but I also wouldn't shed tears if that shop did that too me and then I read in the paper it burned to the ground haha
