Since they decided to put the oil filter in a horrible place and it makes a mess every time I took it off, I decided to do something about it. Took a windshield washer fluid jug and cut to contour the filter/space the filter occupies. Fits perfectly and still leaves room to spin the filter off by hand. With careful maneuvering due to the tight spaces there is no mess left behind. I know I sound like an infomercial but give it a shot. It works wonders!!!

Give it a shot, take your time. You’ll be glad you did. Make sure the handle part faces the front of the truck and once the filter comes loose just have a rag ready to hold it with. Since the jug is plastic you can conform it to any shape to get it out without spilling what’s inside.

Are you using the stock size oil filter or the slightly oversized?

Stock size. Should’ve gotten some pics as I was removing it but didn’t have an extra set of hands to take them.

No more mess. Also no more cuts and bangs on my knuckles

Would love to but I can already here my dealer denying warranty coverage if the engine ever tanks. (Yes I know about magnuson-moss but still... Plus it does not apply to my maxcare lifetime)

Yup. That maxcare warranty has you. No modifications whatsoever

whats wrong with a plane old oil plastic pan that you use to catch the oil from the engine
Because the used oil from the filter gets all over everything especially the EPS unit before it gets in the pan. Personally I don't worry too much about it and just wipe it off when I get done. I never had much luck not making a mess no matter what method I tried.

Thanks for the tip

So this doesn’t spill when trying to remove it with a filter inside it and oil?

I’m gonna try this next month when I change my oil. I currently try a big ziplock bag but that doesn’t work well for me.

Glad I'm not the only one who, even after trying all the tips on this site, still makes a mess while removing the filter! Thankfully, I'm on 10K OCIs, so that helps.

Grab a gallon ziplock, loosen the filter to spin by hand, place ziplock around filter and spin it off. All the oil goes in the bag and the filter. Just hold it there a min and then remove it. Basically zero mess.

I don’t drop the filter in it. There’s enough room to lower the windshield washer jug and rest it on the steering rack and pull the filter out. Then I take the jug out.

Has anyone ever figured out how to keep your hand from slipping so bad on the filter after the oil starts leaking
out of it. It takes forever to get it off because of all the slipping on the oil that's now all over the outside of the
filter lol! Using one of the many configurations of oil filter wrenches takes forever too!

This is my bigger issue. If I can get by the whole "have something in place to catch the oil but still allow enough room to actually ACCESS the filter", there is still the issue of not being able to spin it off fast enough once it gets slippery from oil.
