Hi Folks,
New member here. I have a 2017 2500 CTD. Its a 4x4 short bed. My problem is that it has the factory transforce tires and I can take a wet paper towel and wave over it and it will get stuck on flat wet ground.
That truck is heavy and the moment the tires make one complete revolution, they glaze over with mud and turn into slick tires, no matter how slow I try to ease away. I have dug myself out with a shovel several times and now had to dump 180 bucks on a wrecker to pull it and a drive on trailer out.
I will eventually get a winch for the thing but for now I need some tires.
The truck is tall enough so I wont be lifting it...I will pretty much keep it factory spec.
I do tow a camper so E range tires are a must but I need about as aggressive tire I can get and still tow the camper safely...any help on tire brands would be great...I would love to go with a mud tire but I do tow a camper and that might not be a good happy medium. I just need a kind of tire that will give me a little more bite before it glazes over with mud

I’m a cooper fan. They have a tire they make for Discount tire/America’s tire store that is pretty good “ATP” I believe.

I like my Mickey Thompson atz p3. You can find them cheaper than coopers some places. They are similar to the cooper st maxx. Both are hybrid AT/MT tires which are probably what you want with a lot of towing and off road. I'm a contractor and tow everyday and go to the muddy landfill multiple times a week with my dump trailer.

I hear good things about the nitto ridge grapplers to .

The Mickey thompsons have a 45000 mile warranty. A full on MT will not have any type of mileage warranty.

Mastercraft is made by copper they are a AT/MT hybrid tire i only have a couple thousand miles on them so far but good road manners great in heavy pouring rain
Haven't mudded with them but hear they do well there to and $1208 out the door for a 35" ten ply tire i figured i would give them a try

I ran Toyo mt's on my Duramax for years. Last set I went with Toyo at's and regretted it. My 1 ton ram will get toyos before hunting season. I tow a 10k 5th wheel about 12k miles a year and I still got 50k out of the Toyo mt's. Can't say enough good things about them. I know guys get similar results from the BFG KM 2's but I've never personally ran them....it's Toyo for me. Expensive but worth it.

Love the look of the A/T tires that are out there but the ride, noise, wear mileage usually sucks. Changed mine out about 15K miles ago to Michelin Defender LTX M/S. They look and ride as nice as a highway tire, have high wear ratings and best of all I've had no issue with them when off road in slick, muddy conditions. Took them hunting last year back home in Tennessee and through all the deep red mud ruts, small streams, wet muddy disked fields they never clogged up or let me down. Think I had to put the truck in 4wd once throughout an entire week. Most of the fields/off road riding I do out here is on dryer ground with cactuses, rocks and such and they do just fine in 2wd on that type of open ground.

I have the Nitto ridge grapplers on my truck and they work really well off road and ride surprisingly smooth and quiet. Got about 9k miles on them and still look like they're brand new. I keep them at 38 PSI all the way around when unloaded

I put BFG KO2s on my 3500 & it’s a night and day difference. Very quiet tire as well. The Transforce tires are worthless.

Thanks for the replies folks I really do appreciate it! I kinda have to agree the transforce tires are pretty worthless on wet ground they seem best at asphalt.

You’re going to get boatloads of different opinions on tires. Bottom line make sure you get a tire that meets your required load index rating.

And for the record......

Toyo MT......[emoji4]

How are you getting 50K? How much pressure do you run?

I ran 50 when not towing and 80 when towing. Rotate religiously and that's about it. My buddy that also had a Duramax saw the same kind of mileage and he's not near as **** about his tires as I am. Best mud tire I've ever owned.

I agree. Toyo MY is a clear winner for heavy trucks.

But let’s not forget that how are you daily drive your truck as far as aggressiveness with breaking acceleration and turning has a lot to do with tire life.

Even the climate here and plays a big role. Hotter climates will eat tires much faster.

Worst mud tire, as far as wear, was the kuhmo KL 71. It was super quiet which I liked but on the same truck I saw 23k out of them. Being directional and only able to rotate front to back didn't help but they're a soft tire and not meant for a heavier truck.

The Transforce tires are sold as an A/T tire and I don't know why. They are a GREAT dually hauling tire for a truck that never sees much more than a little bit of snow/rain and never goes off-road. I had them on my old dually, and if I wanted to do ANYTHING in the yard I had to put it in 4WD. But on-road they had a great ride, and held up awesome while pulling my old 42' Cyclone toyhauler.

I agree with the BFG's you suggested. A great alternative to them are General Grabber AT/2's. Almost identical tread, identical weight ratings in most tire sizes, with a 25% cost savings. And having had both sets on one truck a few years ago, I actually got better tread life out of the Generals.
