so i just got some tires to replace my worn ones, and wouldnt you guess it the person who was changin my tires around sheared off the nut so its almost flush with the wheel so it cant grab onto anything anymore.. any ideas that wont cause any damage to the wheel, and minimal/no damage to other parts? id prefer not to drill it cause.. well damn thats a long stud.. but not against it. i figured torching it would be a good idea but would probably scorch the hell out of the wheel and dont wanna drive around looking like part of my truck was on fire. a friend suggested heating it up and taking a chisel and hammer and try to seperate the outer edge of the remaining nut and the inside of the wheel as he said hes gotten a few off like that but as i said id like not scorching up my wheel if i can help it. and unrelated i have a 2nd issue im unsure of and thinking its a solenoid issue with the tranny. when i go to hammer on it on the hwy to pass or get on the hwy it downshifts normal but will just redline til you let go or til the engine lets go. any ideas on this? ive changed the batter 2 times, once because a shop owner told me that a bad battery can cause the engine to run rich and give firing codes like crazy, and it fixed it. then it would just die after a day or 2 of no use so well another one! (previous batter was halfway through its life anyway) and got a new big 810 CCA battery and now the cruise control works right! (didnt before this last battery swap) and it even shifted when i hammered on the gas. but i just noticed on the way back from the shop after the lug nut catastrophe that my check engine light came back on, and i was back to redlining but still have cruise control..

It honestly may be easiest to grind the stud off from the rear. Sucks this had to happen.

Bit confused on your post, but thinking that the lug nut broke off partially? Remove the other 4 or 7, and try to pull the tire off, use a hammer or force, jack up down side to side etc. then replace the stud and nut.

the problem is there is also another lug nut thats also stuck. and yeah it broke off with maybe 1-2mm sticking out. it still has the brake dust covers on it and we were thinking either drilling the stud out or cut a notch in the dust cover and cut/grind the back of it out

also i was looking online to buy some lug nuts and everyone online says the factory choice lug nuts suck and to get a hard steel single piece (no cap) to help prevent this. i guess they said the inside under the dome shaped cap is a softer metal and cant take to much of a beating? idk how true this is but im trying to find a lug nut set that i can just put on instead to maybe help prevent this issue in the future

its true. Ford has the same problem with a lot of their lug nuts. 2 pieces with a chrome cap over steel underneath. search swollen lug nuts and you'll probably find a lot of threads. I don't think it's wollen as much as turned. where the cap loosens around the nut underneath and can literally turn causing it to get out of shape and you start to notice the wrench size you should be using isn't big enough. eventually the cap just turns on the nut underneath. I am buying a set of McGard's or Gorilla's before the fall for my Ram. For 22mm or 7/8 hex side m14 x 1.5 i believe is my Ram size, Amazon seems by far the cheapest option.

i was looking at some from them but they seem to all have a key... and we lose **** around here... trying to find a nice looking 1/2-20 thread size lug nut that looks remotely ok without breaking the bank is a bit of a struggle lol..

Auto Zone stocks a solid lug nut on the shelves. Only problem is, they are $20 for 4.

Now about the broken ones. If it was me I would pull the axle and grind the backs off.
