So i built this beautiful 01 4x4 ram for my wife. Not long after our son came home after 6 years over seas in the air force and totaled it. So rather than take a total loss i bought a 97 for her with a bad tranny, thinking it would be a simple swap. I realize now after reading some threads its not that simple. Any advice is greately appreciated.

Are they both the same motor? I think the 5.9 gas has a different torque converter balancer and flex plate due to the 5.2 being internally balanced but same transmission behind both. Both are 46re

Both have 5.2 motors. The new trucks tranny has nothing in the forward gears. Has reverse. I think when i get a day im going to pull them both so ive got them side by side, then decide if i want to rebuild or attempt a rebuild. I rebuilt one out of a 79 labaron like 30 years ago. Right now im just gathering info on the complications of putting the 01 into the 97. Baby loves her trucks.

If both are 5.2 then same exact trans. Everything will be a direct swap

Both should be 46RE units. Points of interest to compare to swap are the overall case, the electrical plugs, and the cooler lines. If the case and the plugs are the same - it's the same basic trans inside too. I think there may be some chance the cooler line adapters in the side of the trans may need swapped, but that should be an easy fix.

As far as the electronics goes - the 46RE trans has a governor pressure transducer and a regulator solenoid to control governor pressure for shift points. They also have an overdrive solenoid to control overdrive, and a lock-up solenoid to control the torque converter lock-up. If it's an RE series trans (meaning electronic governor circuit) the parts are the same.

The broken old unit - first guess would be a failed rear clutch pack, either worn out clutches or the piston ring has failed. Front of the 46RE rebuilds like a 727 for the most part. O/D unit takes a few special tools to rebuild.
