So first off, never have I ever meddled with ring and pinions, pinion bearings, gearing, so on and so forth when it comes to differentials. I took my 83 dodge ( a while back now) to have new bearings and i forget all what put in thinking itd fix the clunk of my chryco 9 3/4 (i believe) going into gear. Well, as this was all done i was told that it needs a new ring and pinion in order to be geared correctly and didnt have the extra cash at the time to go ahead with it. Is this true or? Like I said, i have no idea but im looking for advice on how to get my truck back on the road. It drives down the road now but it whines like crazy so its been sitting for about a year now. Please any help is greatly appreciated.

have you checked to make sure the diff fluid is topped up? also are you sure the clunk is coming from the axle? i find mine usually comes from the transmission when the park paw disengages.

agree with above, check fluid levels for the whining. the 9 1/4 rear ends typically had leaky rubber drain plugs, could be low on fluid. That's assuming it's the original rear end, some earlier ones had metal 8 pt plugs that were a b*tch to remove. if you have a metal plug, you'll need a I believe a 1/2 or 3/4 (forget which one) inch ratchet with no socket attached to remove the plug.

I'm not sure 'geared correctly' is a thing. if your ring and pinion are not worn, then you don't NEED new ones. however, if you want to change the gearing to your preference, then obviously, yes. clunking as stated could be from the trans and also check your u joints.

I have had new bearings and a new crush sleeve eliminator put into the rear end. Before that it would "clunk' when i put in to gear. It doesnt now but when i had the mechanic "fix" the rearend he said its whining because i need a new ring and pinion. Im not sure how to install it really is what im saying. The mechanic said itd be another 5 bills to install them and "set it up". I really cant afford that but i dont want to do something wrong and blow up all the money ive spent this far. Thr fluid is full.

It drives down the road fine right now but it is super loud, almost like a squeal and it stops when i let off the gas so i dont think its a u joint right? Im not sure really. I just want the old truck back on the road. Next time ill probably just buy different axles from the scrap yard off a bigger truck and go ahead and kill the mpg some more i guess.
