Hi all, new to RAM and my truck is in transit. I was just curious how many miles people have put on relatively trouble free with good maintenance. Is 250,000 a reasonable expectation. I'm wondering about the 5.7. Thanks.

IMO, there are very very very few vehicles that will go 250,000 miles trouble free.

There is always one here or one there, but as a percentage of a model year of any make the percentage of any manufacturer that will go 250k miles trouble free is very small on average.

The ones that usually do are long distance highway runners that put the miles on very quickly.

The ave. person puts on 12-15k miles a year, so to hit 250k on ave. will take about 20 years which is a long time for parts to age and wear out.

What's your definition of "relatively trouble free"? Trucks by nature tend to get worked harder than cars, so more things tend to break.

That said, most vehicles on the road today should have an intact engine and transmission at 200k miles. Depending on where you live, I wouldn't expect most suspension and other soft parts to have any good performance at that point, especially given the sorry state of most roads in the US.

Powertrains just aren't built with that mindset anymore. They are so riddled with emissions and fuel economy doodad gimmicks its impossible. Just about vehicle non-exotic is now built with the idea in less than 20yrs it will be recycled into scrap for another vehicle. Everything is single use, throw away now. No classics. The last classic that rolled off an assembly line in my opinion was the Buick GNX. Even if I could store my ‘17 for 20yrs, properly, ever plastic, rubber and pot metal piece and fastener would snap crackle and pop within 20 miles in 2039.

I will also say this, if you want the powertrain to last do NOT go by the rec. fluid changes. Those recommendations are for sales (JD cost of ownership crap) not for longevity.

For example, I change my rear differential gear oil every 2 years max. ( I do tow also) But it is so easy to do now there is not any reason not to. Well other than spending $20-30 on it. I also only use top of the line gear oil - Redline.

My Oil is generally changed every 3-5k miles even when using full synthetic - this can often times be in as little time as 1-2 weeks time as I tend to take the truck on long trips.

Trans fluid, I haven't decided on yet - it is listed as a lifetime fill and as such will be honored by my lifetime warranty with no fluid changes. My mechanic side says to change the fluid at least if not the fluid and filter every 50-60k.

I had a 2o1o that I got rid of last year with just under 200k miles. The only issue with the engine/transmission was at 120k miles. The MDS solenoid went out. It was a $1000ish repair. Minor repair was the idler pulleys twice and a thermostat. I currently own a 2o15 Power Wagon with 0k miles that is in the shop for a tranny repair.

Thanks for the replies! I have a 2012 Silverado that I'm trading in with 145,000 trouble free miles and I'm hoping the new RAM will treat me the same.

I had a 2013 Ram 1500 Longhorn, 5.7, 8 sp transmission, traded it in this past February, 265,000. Had a misfire on #2.

Replaced rear brakes and rotors, rear outer axle bearings, and that's it, beyond oil changes, and all the differential fluids as recommended, and plugs. Replaced all the headlight bulbs.

Best truck I've ever had. Was a diehard Ford guy before. Trades for a 2019 Ram 1500. 35,000, no issues.

Hope this one is as good!
