Is it possible to program your own route if you want to go a different route than it gives you?

You may be able to add waypoints.

I usually just drive over to the road I want to use, and let the GPS recalculate the route. Sometimes (if it is quicker by distance) it will keep trying to route you back to the original route at ever turn (sometimes even asking you to make a u-turn), but I either turn the GPS volume all the way down or just ignore it until it suggest the route I had in mind.

Another option is, when you are first selecting your route, before you hit "Ok" you have the ability to switch between a few options of routes. This is good if you want to stick with your original plan, but doesn't help when you want to change routes on the fly.

That's about what I figured. Guess I'll use my phone. Sad huh? All the money they want for it and I have to use something else. Thanks for the reply

Yes, this fancy navigation setup can be quite aggravating at times.
Mine doesn't use the best routes as they are town roads and it keeps trying to route me over to a county road which is in terrible shape.
Of the three options it will come up with many times it is not the one that I want.
I find Version mapping to be quite good but you can't load those routes ad even goggle has better routing often.

To me, GPS is only for when you do not know where to go. Even Waze, Google Maps, (fill in GPS company) are useless in the NY/NYC area. Traffic rerouting is garbage too, EVERY road has traffic, there is no way to route to one without traffic in rush hour.

So, my practice is set my GPS before I leave, either ignore or end route until I get to where I now need GPS. I know my little tricks around NY/NYC traffic, once I get to the point where I need guidance, then I either set the GPS form my previous destination (should work in motion) or turn the GPS volume back up.

GPS, Voice activation and other such things are better handled by cell phone companies. Car manufactures realize that, and have almost given up. This is why CarPlay/Android Auto is coming in more and more vehicles every year. They finally got wise to this.

Now companies like BMW that make you pay a monthly subscription to use your own CarPlay need to stuff it, where the sun don't shine. Stupidest thing ever, the OS is run on the phone, you already paid for the vehicle, there is no actual BMW service being provided for their fee.

I think I'm one of the few ones that likes the factory nav. I'll admit there's been a few times that it has been less than stellar, but for the vast majority of my usage it's been spot on and I always get to where I'm going much sooner than I'm supposed to (that may also be in part to making some seriously good time on the highway). Much like JPT, when the scenario comes up that it wants me to do something stupid, I just ignore it and go the way I want til it re-routs the way I want it. However, I also scout out my trips prior to leaving on my computer and pretty much have the route down in my head as well. I don't do that because of the trucks navigation, just something I did prior to having gps in cars and never got out of the habit, and just like knowing what the route is.

That being said, I still also check the trucks step by step nav prior to leaving to make sure it's taking me the route I want. And this is obviously dealing with longer trips, I don't really ever use it for around town stuff very much but have found it to be pretty accurate when I have. Also love having the center display in a good visible area and then the directions/reminders popping up in the gauge cluster since I leave the nav volume off.

x2. My issue with the truck's navigation has nothing to do with Ram's choice of Navi. I think it is up there as one of the best OEM Navi's I've owned. The problem is, cell phone manufactures are light years ahead with the use of apps (can be updated) and maps are typically are free. I love my Ram's navi, I just wish I had Apple CarPlay.

I'm definitely with you there, they have vast room for improvement in that area. With the car play, would you still get the gauge cluster directions as well? That's probably my favorite part of the whole setup.

Have you too realized that the Ram Navigation sucks? Never up to date, not user-friendly, pathetic excuse coming from Ram.

Huh. Well, I’m another few and far between fan of the factory nav. I’ve used used it now in multiple states where I have no clue where I’m going...first time ever being there. It’s never failed me, never sent me down a wrong road, it’s been 100% and fairly user friendly.

As a plus for me, we recently switched from Verizon to T Mobile. Horrible service now. We lose service all the time. There’s no way I could trust our cellular navigation at this point....especially somewhere brand new, pulling a trailer. I didn’t specifically go looking for factory navigation when I bought mine, but I’ll never go without it now.

This is why even if I had carplay, I would still have the OEM Navi. I have GPS on my motorcycle, just for this reason. If my phone loses signal, I still have a full set of the US maps as backup.

It really depends where you travel. My truck doesn't have factory nav, but I do have a Garmin that I keep in it. When heading up north in the winter for snowmobile trips, where you really cannot count on a phone signal, the GPS just keeps working. Plus, if a call comes in, having the independent GPS is helpful, both apps are not competing for the screen, and the phone battery stays charged.
