I had the exact same problem! My map light was always reflecting off of it at night and then onto the window. Kept making me think someone was passing. Had some carbon fiber kicking around so stuck it on.

How easily does that piece come off? I want to paint mine matte black, the glare drives me bonkers!

You need to loosen a few screws first, under cup holder and a couple under rubber piece next to it. Then pry with fingers.

I read they changed it on some years and that chrome piece wasn’t removable, that true?

I think it was in 2015 when it changed. On my 2016 it does not pop off....It is plastic welded on. You can cut off the plastic welds that reattach with small screws and big washers but that is more work than some people are comfortable doing.

A short piece of electrical tape over the map light works too.
