So I scrapped off the bubbling paint from over the rear drivers quarter.
Way worse than I thought.
How far do I have to go so the rust does not come back?Ram July 18 2019 sm.jpg

Keep going until you see good metal. It may take a patch panel to fix it properly.

Ok, so there is a difference in the rust - the top left was not rust until I washed the surface.

Ill take the stainless trim off & see how bad.

grind it down, until you ha ve 2 inches of solid shiny metal. apply your compound, then primer over that. may as well leave it primerd since the rust is going to come back fore too much time has passed. year or two, for sure.

The little bit of surface rust can just be sanded off, but the area where its flaking doesn't look salvageable. You could probably clean it up, throw some bondo and zinc primer over the worst of it and have it look good, but in a year or less it will likely start to show again. If you're good on a tig welder it's really not that bad a job, but if you're like me and can weld stuff in a pinch, but it doesn't look pretty you may have to pay someone to do at least the welding part for you. I've seen people actually cut out the rusty section and epoxy or jb weld the replacement panel section on with a small overlap and hide the seam with bondo and glazing putty, but the overlap is a rust magnet as moisture gets in there and it's kind of a poor way to do it, but it would last longer than the bondo over the rust and repaint it approach.

Im ok with a welder & have a brand new Mig,
I would be more into the second idea - to cut out & overlap behind & bondo.

I do have somewhere Por-15 - will have to see if its still good.

Grind until you get clean metal like everyone says.
Then feel into the hole and look to see if there is any foam, I am not sure if they used it there like they do on the rockers on a lot of models. If there is any foam, remove all of it that you possibly can.

Then if there is any rust left at all, treat with Rustmort or similar stuff - inside and out, you must treat the backside.
Patch the hole with metal or fiberglass - I use fiberglass - then finish with putty/bondo.
High zinc primer, sand and paint.
THEN you have to hit the backside and the lip area with a good rustproofing - one that will flow a bit and not rubberized undercoating but rather a rustproofing that you can really coat the back side of the panel.

If done right, it should last for a few years but you may have to reapply the rustproofing every year or so. You really can't apply to much in that area imo.

Usually you can access the back side if you remove the taillight on a lot of trucks and then spray with a hose/wand.

Rust can't form if it doesn't get air and water.

The POR 15 is good stuff, but I still prefer to treat it with Rustmort first as it converts rust. Then cover with POR, POR doesn't treat the rust as much as it is a very waterproof paint and that is how it works as far as I know. I could be wrong though.

When you put the trim back on, you might want to coat the bed/back of the trim with a heavy marine grease or something. Just in case the rust was caused by dirt/salt stuck between the trim and bed vs. the rust starting from the backside and coming out.

alright.....

see that bead, just under the metal that is left, top left side of the rust?

that is what caused your rust, that you see, you also have gobs of rust, underneath and above that bead too.
that bead runs along your quarter panel.

basically you have a few options. (Rreal WOrld not dumbasss stuff)

Cut out the panel and replace. cut out at least two inches above the rust, as viewed inside and out.

replace the box with used salt free version

bondo it up and see how long before it comes back, year or two si norm

Get teh biggest damn Fender flares you can find and drive it as it it sits for 5-9 more years until rust gets so bad it shows above the fender wheels.

Fender flares and bondo are chepaest
NEw Box is probably smartest.

welding in quarter panels is probably not going to keep rust away any longer than 5 years either.
nature of the fix. Lwo temp steel quarters and weakened weld points. Rust attractents.

I like the options - the reason it took me so long to sand some rust off & POR it, I was looking for another box, they has one about 3 hours away from me, but once they sent me hi-res pics, it was not much better.
The local scrap yard wants to much.
So right now its going to be bondo, & maybe find something in the future.

OK done for this year - after i put trim back on.
& no its not perfect - I waited too long for this as its getting cold out here already this year.
Over the next week it will get down near freezing, & right now its only 12*C or 56*F.
