And you think RAM's oil filter is a pain...

found this on 95octane...

At this point, anyone who cares about trucks knows that the Ford Ranger is making a comeback. The 2019 Ranger is one of the best trucks on paper in the mid-range segment with its 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine producing impressive power and torque.

If you are in the market for a truck and like the Ranger, you should know there is one downside to the truck for the DIY crowd. According to a report by our friends over at The Truth About Cars, the procedure for changing the oil has been revealed, and it requires some extra steps that will make the process tedious. In order to fit its larger oil cooler, the oil filter of the EcoBoost is in a weird spot on the side of the engine – and to get to it, you have to remove the left wheel.

That means you will need to jack the truck up and pop off the wheel. After the wheel is gone, you have to open an access panel that has nine push-pin retainers. The pins sound like something your local oil change place will certainly break or lose in short order. In order to drain the oil, you’ll also have to remove the four bolts that hold the power steering control module underbody shield. This sounds like a pain, so getting Ranger oil changes will likely be something you want to take the truck to a Ford dealer to handle properly.

Lol. That has so many steps I’d actually never let the dealer do it. They’ll surely forget to do something right. But then again I’ll never have a ford ranger so there’s that :893karatesmiley-thu

Talk about an OEM trying to get you back to a dealer.
They went a little overboard it.
But it’s okay by me, I would not own a Ranger anyway.

That's crazy. I smell some after market stuff to add a drain line and move the filter mount.

Funny cause after I bought my Ram i was at a dealership waiting for my daughter to arrive with her Escape for service and saw the new Ranger. I thought geez, looks pretty sharp and probably would have been a good midsize for me to consider. Wish I had known about it. Then I saw the price (more than my Ram)...and now this. No thanks.

They corrected the story after Ford informed of the correct procedure that does not require removing the LF wheel. You have to turn the wheel hard over and remove 3 of the 9 fasteners to peel back the wheel well arch to access the filter.

Nope. The 6.7 Cummins is not a peach either. After doing it a dozen times I have become pretty proficient but it is an art.

The 12V oil filers weren't that bad...but the fuel filters...well, in a different class for sure.....

The oil filter in my 2019 is in an aweful spot. I scrape knuckles every oil change. That being said the Ranger location is absurd. The Ranger is way overpriced and I agree with Buddy Guy, they want you back at the dealership.

I'm gonna give you a little history lesson about Ford.Back in the late 60s and early 70s Ford trucks had what was called twin I beam suspension. They always put the right above the cross member the oil plug and you didn't have a large pan to catch the oil it went every where including you hot motor oil ain't fun .

Chrysler is talking about bringing back something like the dakota .The first one I had was 1992 with 3.9 v6 it would pull the world and then I bought 2003 dakota 3.9 by quad cab it wouldn't pull a greased string out a cats butt.

Well I won't ever have to worry, I don't ever plan on buying anything with the Blue Oval on it.

Changing the oil on my '06 is a piece of cake. Even my wife's '14 Mazda 3 isn't bad.

So true! It’s truly amazing how many people don’t think about maintenance items when they are looking a new vehicle for purchase. Whether its a new/used car/truck or anything in between watch for those common maintenance items for is DIY’ers and you’ll see how much trouble the engineers went through to screw us
