87-just stay away from the ethanol is what is most important...... zero
I wish.... good luck finding ethanol free 87 in Ontario ...or Canada even.

shell and a few others have ethanol free 91 but it's like $0.30 /liter (1.13/gal) more.
that would be $29 extra on a full tank in my truck....no thanks

Ethanol isn't going to hurt these trucks in the least as long as its 10% or less on 2015 and older, 15% is OK for 2016 and newer according to FCA. I'm no fan of it but it costs .50 more a gallon for E0 87 than E10 87 here so its not worth the money except for my small equipment.

I run ethanol free premium where ever i can find it, my 6.4 2500 is a tow vehicle, 2 or 3 times a year, I like the mpg gains vs 89 octaine, all intown driving. However, it doesn't pay for the extra cost. If i didn't work from home, i would likely get 89 octaine. With the 33 gallon tank, i fill up once a month.

Just bought a new Ram Bighorn with the 5.7 Hemi. I was looking at the online owners manual and it said 89 octane was recommended but 87 octane was acceptable . Which one should I use? I have used both at different times and can not tell the difference. Any suggestions?
I always use 93 octane in everything that I own. Lucas added also every time.

I have 50000 miles on my 2011 since new ( except for a few tanks of 89)and have always run 87. Never a knock or ping and runs perfect. Never noticed a differance with 89

I wouldn’t use higher than 89 unless its been programmed to run that hot of fuel but that’s just me I spose.

Maybe things have changed in the last few years but usually the only thing a higher octane fuel does for you is just take a few more bucks out of your wallet.

Read an article recently that said essentially the same thing. I will see if I can find it. Use the recommended octane for your engine (89 in this case). Higher octane only burns more cash, adding nothing to performance or mileage. Lower octane can lead to pinging and potential engine issues long term.

I’m in Nova Scotia and I have yet to see ethanol gas around here ( at least any markings for it )

I run 89 in my truck it makes a difference in my mileage. Usually only try to run shell if possible

Nova Scotia is definitely an ethanol mandated province. If you look at Shell and Irving premium fuel you will probably see sticker saying ethanol free

87 is just fine, you'll never tell the difference between and you get slightly better mileage with th e87 anyway.

89 is what I normally put in it. When I know I'm going to be towing I put 93 in it.
I figure the piece of mind is worth more then the 5.00 or so difference for a full tank
truth be know after testing over extensive miles pulling a mid range weight trailer that as long as you stay 65 or under the 87 actually does the best. That is on moderately hilly terrain, NO big mountains or ultra flat desert. Would imagine at serious hills and altitude the 89 or 93 would be better, but not so otherwise.

I just towed my 7500lb TT 650 miles each way thru mountains. Used 87 and averaged 11.3 there and 11.2 back.

For 2014, the manual said only 89. In 2015, they revised it to say the same thing the 5.7 says: 89 recommended, 87 acceptable. Not sure if they changed it again later, but I never had any problems running 87 in mine. In FL, 87 is the lowest grade. When we went north a few times, I saw 85 as low grade and 87 as mid grade. In that case I always went to the 87 mid grade still. Not sure if elevation maybe has anything to do with it, but I never heard any knocking or felt any power loss even all the way up at 4 and 5k RPM. I'm inclined to believe it doesn't simply because I never had any issues in the mountains of Tennessee either but who knows. Maybe mine just wasn't picky.

91 non ethonal for both my 06-5.7 with 353000 miles on it and my 2018 ram classic 5.7..actully everything I have- lawn mowers jetski ect use non ethonal. Iv seen what that stuff does to rubber tubing and plastic, although, I'm sure by the time you see any ill side effects from ethonal in the truck , the truck will have bigger problems anyways..on a side note, if you can afford a $50000 + truck you should be able to afford whatever sorta gas you want to put in..that is- if the gas choice is dependent on cost..there certainly is a argument for what is actually needed to make the truck go vroom vroom..

I run 87 in my 2017 ram 1500. My mechanic said to run 89 only when towing hard. Only benefits are that it’s a cooler gas the higher the octane.
Stay with 87. My owners manual says it is recommended here in Canada.
