Limited Slip Diff... Please chim in

OK. Ive got a serious itch to install a LSD in the rear of my truck. I have 3.21 gears and dont plan on changing them because I would have to tear apart the front diff to achieve that. Ive seen the only makers are Auburn, Yukon or the OEM Mopar unit. It seems the Auburn is a POS and ive read a few threads where they blew up inside the housing. The Yukon and Mopar both say they are rebuildable, and the Yukon has a lifetime warranty. Right now, im leaning more toward the Yukon unit, but want to do as much research as I can before just buying something... A reputable shop in town will be doing the install once I get all the parts together.

What are yalls opinions on which to choose? What are your experiences with installing a LSD in your truck? If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

Matt at Moe's Performance has had lots of experiences with the different types of LSD for our trucks. You might check with him on what he might recommend. I think he might also sell a couple different kinds also, but I'm not sure.

I see Moe's only offers the OEM unit for my year model truck. I didnt see the Yukon on their site. Ill shoot them a PM later today and see what they say.

I wonder how these work with the traction control on the truck. Hopefully I dont have to change anything electronically so these two systems play well together.

In the past I wouldn't buy a truck without LSD but got such a screaming deal on my 14 Sport 3:21 without it I couldn't refuse it. Since then, I've changed my mind. With traction control and Auto 4 wheel drive, I don't miss it. If I found a new truck on the lot with LSD I'd take it but to spend the money to put one in mine, I wouldn't even consider that option.

If you're doing a lot of off-roading it might help but with the 4X4 gear case in your Laramie you are not doing a lot of off-roading. Spend the money on other things you want.

I pull a jeep and heavy trailer quite often, and plan on buying a travel trailer in the future. Ive been stuck on gravel roads before pulling the jeep. Hell, ive been stuck in wet grass in 2wd before. For around $800 to have a LSD installed, parts & labor, is very well worth my money.

Moe's says they quit selling the Yukon and the Auburn for our axles because they are junk. The OEM Mopar unit is the best option out there, unless you want to change gears and an axle shaft to make a Detroit Truetrac work with the 9.25ZF rear end.

I just can't stand the way traction control feels when it's working, especially in the snow. First thing I do in snow after it's in gear is turn the tc off...that being said I'm sure it works just fine if you like the way it works, I just prefer more of a high rpm and little bit of wheel spin to get going. Certainly to each their own.

I’ve been going back and forth on getting a lsd for a few years now. I am also considering a travel trailer. After renting some it is absolutely pathetic how I need 4 wheel to make it up a gravel incline. I haven’t looked into install prices but at $650 for just the lsd and install kit from moe’s I don’t know if it’s worth it.

You're looking at $800-$1k for everything. Parts and labor. You would pay basically the exact same price if you bought a truck with it already installed, they would just work it into the monthly note and you wouldnt notice the money being gone in one lump sum.

Im really talking myself into doing it... Its like why buy a truck with 8 cylinders if half of them are always being cut off... Why buy a truck with 4wd if only two of the wheels will ever pull?...

I figured my days of pulling loads were done. Then my wife got a TT 2 weeks after I bought a RWD truck. I plan camp sites accordingly.

It seems like the longer I wait the more expensive it is. I thought the last time I checked prices the lsd was like $499 with a free install kit. Maybe if there’s a sale on the them I will jump on it. I love my truck and has all the options I thought I wanted at the time. I wish I knew more about gear ratios and lsd when I bought it.

It lots cheaper when you get it as an option when buying new. They might go on sale every now and then at Moe's. You could always check a salvage yard.

Eaton doesnt make a Truetrac to fit the newer ZF rear ends, or even plans to make one. Only offered until 2011, I believe.

You can make a Truetrac fit, but you have to change gears and replace the passenger side axle... and that equals BIG money.

From Moes: "The Trutrac is the strongest LSD available, but it is a more complicated swap for the 9.25ZF. You would also need to purchase an older 9.25 ring/pinion and a 2nd driver side axle shaft to use on the passenger side. That is what I run in my own trucks. I cooked 2 OEM limited slips,the dealer replaced both under warrenty,then I bit the bullet and sprang for the Detriot Tru Trac option in my ZF.It was expensive as hell,but I haven't been able to blow it up in 3 years of drag racing,where-as I was going through the OEM limited slips once a year.The OEM limited slips do not like water box burn-outs and sticky drag radials or slicks,lol. The OEM LSD's are perfectly fine for most owners though,although if you're into a bit of hardcore off roading you might want to upgrade to the DTT.

Yeah, I've never even turned my truck past 3,000 probably, maybe passing somebody on the highway. Lol. I can honestly say my foot has never been on the floor. never been one for going fast. I'm sure these statements might make of you ask, wtf is this guy doing in the performance section!

My buddy has a formula trans am that I like to pick with. I tell him, "you can make people scream at 100mph, and I'll make em scream at 10mph."

The jeep is where all the offroad money is spent. I've replaced both axles since this pic was taken. I'm slowly working my way toward a small block.

Now that's a toy,lol. If you smallblock swap it,are you going with a carb or fuel injection? Any thoughts on LS swapping it,the aftermarket is huge these days for the LS swapped stuff
