Tell me what you guys think about this. Looks to me like the rear main seal is leaking. I happened to look under the truck and saw a drop of oil on the bottom of the trans. There’s also some on a wire harness and the starter is wet where it bolts to the block. I’m not thinking oil pan simply because the bolts aren’t and the bottom of the oil pan isn’t wet. Let me know what you guys think...5a556edec0a742f2219325ffe323cca6.jpga9863079ff6fcb1458bcfb51e073f915.jpg259a4ec390909d101417b9b36f8cdb3d.jpg11a661334094d614633e6b3167aa0747.jpg

On my 1999 when the rear main was leaking it came straight down from between the engine and transmission. Oil was all over the transmission.
Really sorry to see this.

I think it is rare to have a rear main just start leaking without some rough ride or work. Last rear main I had leak the tranny was always soaked. it leaked for 8 years, didnt bother me much.

So it's been damp in that area off and on for about 5 years now. I brought it into the dealer 3 times while it was under warranty and was told all 3 times that it's a "seep not a leak". Well now at 58k it's a leak. I'm assuming it's the rear main seal but it could be something else too. I was really hoping it was the crankshaft position sensor leaking but that was dry....

I've got about 2000 miles on the Bils and since I replaced the sway bar end links that noise is gone...

It’s part of the power train so you should have 5 years/60,000 miles on that. Depending on your time line you might still have warranty on that.

Without seeing it in person I do believe it is your rear main seal.

What I would do first off is clean the **** out of that area and try and degrease it the absolute best you can and see how fast that leak is.

I know some people will just ride it out and deal with it but honestly I would get that fixed if it was my truck.

This sucks man. You should stop over so we can have a beer and talk about it[emoji41]

Yeah, goes back to what I was saying about rear mains usually don't just show up and what dealers say when confronted with seal leak, lol. It was 600 bucks to fix mine they obviously have to drop tranny, so I just let it leak. In your case it probably was never a good connection, in my case it was after some tranny work. It never amounted to much in my case but a few drops. Nothng you can really do unless you feel like paying out 600. Kinda watch it.

See what tranny bolts you can access, maybe make sure they are all torqued.

Not to rub salt on it, but it is at least possible that the additional travel of you front end is making it worse. That is why on anything I like to see what work was recently done. When you hit the brakes and your front end travels 3 inches more, it "can" jar some things awry even seals. That clunk happened after the bills, you figured that out, but also it is "possible" the extra travel is what opened that leak up. Maybe good maybe bad, good if you can find it and fix it. My guess would be a lot of people wont believe that, but I've seen some stuff in my day I tell ya. Lifts lead to things one wouldn't expect and I've seen my share, always being around the 4x4 crowd 30 plus years.
