Decided to put my new steering wheel in. I figured out how to put an 04-08 wheel in about the same time I discovered Grant made (used to make) a nice aftermarket one for the 04-08's. Just like the one I bought for my Charger (that is now in my Magnum), I'm reasonably certain I bought the last one in existence lol.

Biggest worry was the airbag, 04+ has a dual stage while the 03 is a single stage. Worked out that the single stage wire with the black connector is the high speed stage on the airbag.

IMAG4068.jpg

Everything connects like it should, no plug adaptation needed.

I have a custom soft emblem for it, I just don't remember where it is right now lol. Same radio controls on the back and the cruise buttons work perfectly. I was originally gonna wait until I redid the interior but my original one was getting bad. This can be done very easily to any 02-03 with an 04-08 wheel if you're tired of the minivan wheel.

So the time has come to redo the interior. New carpet, 4th gen seats, new android head unit with backup camera in tailgate handle, remote lock for tailgate, properly fit and secure the console as well as convert to floor shift. Started today ripping out the old seats and carpet.

These are the seats that will be going in

IMAG2950.jpg

Installed the new handle/camera & lock but haven't wired them in yet. Was losing light and starting to cool off so I was at a good stopping point, especially since it's supposed to rain tomorrow.

Probably pull the passenger head off the old lady's wagon to see how bad the carnage is (dropped seat). I'm optimistic for the weekend into next week finishing this up.

Kinda hard to see, but I accidentally discovered the silver cruise switches from an Aspen (that go quite nicely with the silver accents throughout the interior) so I put those in after I removed the column shifter. Need to find a non-column shift shroud (shouldn't be too hard).

IMAG4622.jpg

Pulled out the old shift cable and ran the new one for the console shifter.

IMAG4623.jpg

Gonna lay down some sound deadener and start cutting on the dash to fit the console tomorrow, then I can locate and attach the brackets. Probably run the wiring for the tailgate up as well.

Today's update. Carpet went in fairly easily, just had to cut holes for the console mount. Console is tentatively bolted down for fit pending finishing the wiring tomorrow (but it's in place and the shifter is connected). Rear and front passenger seats are in. All electrical tomorrow: console wiring (including brake switch and 12v outlets), running wire forward for tailgate camera and power latch, adapt seat wiring, figure out what I'm going to do with the OD switch and install the new head unit.

Underbody wiring ran as well as some of the dash wires. Just got the diagrams printed out for sorting the drivers seat, reverse wire for the camera and the various wires going to the shifter that I'll need to splice in various locations (shift interlock, display light). Tailgate lock is a success. Non column shift shroud showed up this afternoon so I put it in as well.

And finito, all done and functional. OD button (from the original column shifter) is where the 12v port behind the steering wheel used to be (always hated it right there). I about gave myself a heart attack when I got a 'no bus' message in the cluster. Apparently I came off the wrong wire for the backup cam, once I undid that all was well again. Have to do a bit more research. I used the supply to the little LED's for the original cupholder set to power the light for the indicator on the console. I'm happy lol.

So does the 4th gen seats and console directly bolt up or was there some modifications that needed to be made. I have been thinking about this for some time, but wondering if its worth it or just get the 3rd gen leather seats.

Seats are a physical bolt in but any wiring has to be sorted and connectors matched and repinned (to do it properly). After looking through the pics you actually have to ask IF the console is a bolt in lol? No, the console is definitely not a bolt in (as I have said before). Pics are pretty self explanatory; are you looking for step by step instructions to install something that was never designed to be there...?

well since its been a while since i have been in ram, does the ac controls light up? i know my dakota ac controls did, so ram's do then i need to figure out why mine are not lighting up. thanks for the idea's, im really digging the console swap in. i havent looked around that much here yet, did you put in a heat shield on under the hood. thats one of the things on my list.

as odd as it sounds, i was hoping to find a 3rd brake light with a review camera. the camera being up against the cab would give way more FOV then on the bumper. i was pondering some kind of fiber-glassed in 3rd brake light with a camera mount slightly below the 3rd brake light or slightly above it.

i do have the sudden urge to get 4th gen seats now... thanks :D

Yes they do, there are 3 tiny little quarter turn bulbs in the back:

-diy-heater-control-bulb-replacement-dsc_0022small.jpg

They're cheap, I think even Rockauto carries them, if not Amazon definitely does. I didn't put a heat shield, my original didn't come with one and I've had an SRT hood since 2013.
Do some digging, good chance someone makes a 3rd brake light camera. I wanted an OEM look and was primarily concerned with backing to a trailer and/or how close my hitch was to the car behind me when parking.
Sorry not sorry, seat swap was worth it though lol, especially with the steering wheel swap (hated the minivan wheel).
