Hi all,
New to the forum, great info! Thumbs up for retroshop and Jeremy’s availability for questions. Thank you sir.

Just ordered HID low beams for my 17 Sport. Projectors. Only problem is I ordered the wrong bulbs (9612) and need 9006 for mine. So sending it back tomorrow for the new ones.

Here is my dilemma. I’m not too mechanically savvy and after watching all the videos installing all the hardware (resistors, capacitors, grounds, ballasts... no clue in how to drill into the frame or where for the resistors to be on metal..) my head is spinning.

I’ve also heard so many stories about late model Rams that don’t play nice with HIDs.. a bit nervous about that.

I am absolutely going ahead with the HID install but would, like to hear from some of you that weren’t mechanically savvy and yet still were able to do it yourselves. How did you find a place to drill into the frame for the resistors and the ground, and what location did you do it?

And if this is too big a job for me any recommendations on where I can go to have them installed?

Thank you!

You might want to check again, starting with the 2016 model year, the factory projectors use 9005 in both highs and lows. Prior model years use 9012 for the lows, 9005 in the highs. 9006 bulbs are used in the vertical fog light housings.
Read up about using AlfaOBD to set the BCM for using HID lighting. Then you don't have to worry about using any of the resistors and/or relay wiring harnesses.
I'm sure someone will chime in about this as quite a few have made this change. There is entire thread on AlfaOBD, the first post has links for doing this.

Thanks crash68, those were indeed typos. Yes I need the 9005 bulbs and I ended up with the 9012s.

Will check into AlfaOBD. Jeremy had sent me the entire packaging for The retroshop HIDs which come with all that stuff.. I’ll look into it.

Jeremy has the late model Ram HID's totally wired. They work.
He was one of the first to come up with a trouble free Ram kit...although he did call my truck The Demon Ram From HID Hell :flamingdevil: ...but he's got it down. No need to worry about making them work.

Lots of good videos online, from Jeremy and others, on how to install the HID kit. You got this...

Thanks again all.

After going back & forth between just doing the install with the entire Retroshop package vs downloading the AlfaOBD... I’ve decided to just stick with retroshop.

Reason being, it would cost me an extra $150 to download Alfa, buy an Android tablet, and buy the Obd Bluetooth... meanwhile I already have everything from retro.

Sure it would be nice to not have to install all the resistors, capacitors, etc and just do it thru Alfa but I’ve already spent enough $$$ on the lights.

Will get to work on them Monday, I’ll keep y’all updated.

Update. Well guys I gave it my best shot but I’m just not mechanically inclined. I spent the better part of two hours with everything laid out. All of the wires, capacitors, resistors, grounds, etc just blew my mind... I barely even knew where to start. Much less where to install everything.. especially with having to bolt the resistors to metal. Then figuring out which wires where what and where they went.

The furthest I got was taking the headlight assembly out and putting in the HID bulb. (Amazingly enough I knew how to take the grill off!) After that my head started spinning.

This is absolutely not a slam on Retroshop as their reputation and customer service is amazing. Rather, I have absolutely zero experience on how to install this stuff.

So off to my buddy’s dealership tomorrow where his service technicians will install everything in half the time. Still very excited to see the finished product.

Thanks again Jeremy for answering all of my questions promptly. Some day maybe I’ll get the hang of it!
