hi guys,

I just got a 2005 1500 4.7l ram with 185000 miles. I know its a lot of miles but i just got it for a work truck. I had changed out the oil and put a set of new breaks pads in the front. Then main thing that I am seeing is that when I let the engine get to normal temp. It stays right in the middle of the thermo gauge. it stays like that when im driving. But i Noticed that if im in a drive through or in traffic it starts to creep up towards the H. Im thinking of changing out the anti freeze and changing the thermostat on it. What else do you guys think I should look at?

Thank you!

Me personally, when I change anything cooling system I change water pump, thermostat, check radiator hoses for softness when cold, they'll be soft when the engine is warm, check your overflow tube to, I had one pinched one time that caused that, and it depends if you have a heat clutch on the engine or an electric fan too, if it's a heat clutch see if it freely spins when the engine is up to temp but with the engine off lol, you'll need your fingers, or radiator might be full of dust and other crap, it could be one thing or all, I always T least check all of those

Sounds like Clutch fan going bad. With engine running, take a rolled up newspaper and touch the fan with the newspaper. If fan stops, you found your problem.

Mine climbs alittle past half when sitting still but it is normal just below the middle mark when going down the road .,when sitting the fan isn't pulling enough cold air through the radiator bur when you get rolling it drops below middle point on the guage.

Heat clutch for sure on that, replacing a heat clutch is much cheaper than an engine lol, I'm in the process of replacing an engine because I had zero knowledge on heat clutches prior

Yes, they're heat activated by a little coil on the front of them is why I call it that

Coil gets hot and applies pressure to engage clutch spinning fan to pull cooler air through
