This will/maybe be our first boat, a 24' cabin cruiser with a weight of 4500#. Add in the trailer, I estimate we may be at a 5500#. Fill the gas tank, add another 250#. I have a 2017 Tradesman crew, 5.8, 3.21, 4x4 and believe the max towing weight is 7990#. I'd know I'd be better off with a 3.92 (which is what I thought I bought), but that ia another story. I've never pulled a large boat. 75% of the time, it will be on flat land. Is the 1500 sufficient, or is this a serious discussion if you want a large boat I may need a 2500 or a trailer with brake assist? Thanks for your input.

Go to the link below first and click on look up my vin. Just to make sure towing capacity is correct.

Do you have the electronic brake controller?

My opinion is that you would be ok, but. i would ad a weight distributing hitch on it to move some of the weight onto the trailer axles. I use the blue ox sway pro for my trailer and it works great. There are others that are cheaper/more expensive. Just do research on which one fits your needs and go with it.

I have pulled more boat with less truck. You should be fine. A boat is easier to tow than a travel trailer. How far are you planning on towing it?

On a side note, I recommend you use ethanol free gas on the boat.

The question is not whether you can tow it, it is whether you can stop it safely.
This is a great point. Most boat trailers of that size have surge brakes. As long as they are functional I doubt you would have any trouble stopping. I know people do upgrade these to electric brakes as well. This is something you must keep maintained to tow safely.

Been towing boats for most of my adult life...you should be fine. Braking, as was already mentioned, is the bigger issue. I'm assuming your boat has a tandem trailer and surge brakes. If it's not a brand new boat/trailer...get those things inspected. Nothing worse than trying to stop your truck with 5,000 lbs pushing it forward.

Trailer should already have surge breaks. I had a similar boat I towed with my 2013 1500 3.55 6 speed. It towed it just fine. I think the tow rating was 8600lbs. My dry weight was about 4700, another 1500 or so for the trailer then add fuel and other junk I was probably about 7000-7500 tops.

And I'd think your trailer is more than 1000lbs. I currently have a 2006 Crownline 250CR with a 2016 Venture all aluminum tandem axle trailer and my trailer weighs 1300. BTW-the dry weight on this boat is 6700lbs. I figure all in I'm at about 8500-9000lbs. I towed this boat a few times with my 2013 with no problems but upgraded to a 2500 to be legal.

TY for the info. I am guesstimating the trailer weight (aluminum) and will have details once I see the boat.

Two things to remember:

1. Doublecheck the brake lights, turn signals, and chains that strap your trailer to the hitch every single trip. Also (if outboard) make sure the motor is properly locked down to the motor mate or whatever is holding it. Change your tires every 5-6 years even if they look fine. Clean your carb/injectors and service your lower unit every season. As far as the towing is concerned, you'll be fine. Just allow a ton of room when braking and turn wiiiiiiidddddeeee.
Oh, and practice backing up in a parking lot for a couple of hours before you get to the ramp so you don't hold up the line. Research ow deep to park the empty trailer for your make/model to get it loaded back up too. Too deep and you'll spear your bow post. Too shallow and you have to power load it, which is baaaddd.

2. You're in a big hulled boat. Please, please remember that every other boat that is shorter than yours can be swamped or severely rocked by you, even if you're not close to them. If you ride close enough to them that you could hit them with a rock the size of a quarter, slow down or drive further away from them. Washing against the rocks or having your boat spear a wave because a party boat went by and swamped your smaller boat is not safe. Boats are fun, but safety is the biggest concern. Don't be a bully.

2a. Take an online boat safety course. They're free, not hard, and probably should be mandatory. You wouldn't believe how many idiots don't know which side you should pass a slower boat on, or what you should have onboard to comply with local laws.

I just bought a little 18’ bow rider boat and the weight between the trailer, boat, gas is probably about 3200 lbs. I have pulled it several times with my 2013 1500 with a 5.7L and 3.92 gears and the only things that I notice is that my boat tends to rock my truck pretty well at times and stopping is the hardest thing to do honestly as my trailer doesn’t have brakes. I’ll remedy that over the off season though. Otherwise, if you have good tires and good brakes and give it time to get up to speed you should be fine. Good luck and enjoy your boat!!

If it does have surge breaks make sure you use the 5-way plug. I had to get an adapter from 7 to 5. The 5th wire keeps it from braking while backing. I didnt know this until i was backing my boat up a hill at the campground. You can also override it by putting a pin in the coupler but the correct wiring is better.

Oh, and grease the axle hubs unless they're greaseless. Unless you enjoy being passed by your uncoupled tires, haha! Been there, done that. Bearing Buddies are great.

Great replies in this thread. Even at 6k with fuel & supplies (put over trailer axle when possible & even weight side to side) you should only be looking at 600 pounds tongue weight. Airbags shouldn’t be required but are nice especially if you need to load the bed.

Timbergroves are well liked on here and really help support dampen & better control the rear suspension as well as keep your desired ride height & stance.

The 3.21 will generally just have to run a gear lower but still work fine with that weight. Use tow haul.

IF you do not liek your trucks sag, when hooked up and towing, grab a set of tuftruck srpings, either 1223V or 1211, depending on if you want to keep OEM ride or not.

Add air lift 100 Bags, if you need or like those things.

Upgrade your brakes.

Gather up all the tools you could possibly need to change a tire on teh side of the road and put them in your truck or boat. Jacks, sockets, etc.

Make sure your boat trailer tongue weight is correct, adjusting the axle's location on the trailer OR adjust ing how far the boat goes up on the trailer, until you get it right.

Practice , Practice, practice launching and retrieving the boat, several times, when no one is about. When you can do with about the same amount of effort it takes to tie your shoes, you are ready.

Always be courteous, with other boaters.
They might not have your experience, Advice from others, etc. Nothing worse than getting yelled at by others when you already know you are doing it wrong but have no idea how to do it right.
Feel free to teach others and help the launch or recover. You will make friends for Life.
I have been rewarded with so many private Ponds I could never fish them all, just by helping out.
Not to mention, I get my boat launched much quicker, once they got out of the way.

Make sure your boat has all the safety flotation devices , then add a couple more. Make one an Infants.
People who should not be allowed to bred, head to the water too.
Add an extra fire extinguisher.

If one big water or the potential for Big Water, get a quality ship to shore PROFESSIONALLY installed.
It;s worth the extra money, for the increased range. When you need it, you usually REALLY need it.

Invest in a top notch Sonar/GPS WITH a Navigation/ Maps card.
When a Fog rolls in, darn nice to be able to get back to your Ramp.
Does nothing for Hazards of other boaters though, so keep your speed sensible.
Keep air horn handy and learn Boat Safety.
Know when you can be on plane, how far from other boaters, shore, meaning of all flags, etc.

Join few boating forums, even one specific for your boat. Learn from others who have already been there, done that.
will save you tons of headaches.

Add another automatic emergency Bilge pump.

Get the accessories for your boat, now, while the are readily available.
Try finding a factory fit travel cover 10 or 20 years later.
Maintain the stuff you buy, finding replacements down the road is expensive.
Upgraded Covers/Latches/Hinges are worth every penny.

Learn how to properly care for all that interior, Exterior, Drive train, Trailer, etc.
never forget about preventative maintenance.
there is a reason they BOAT stands for break out another thousand

Psst, that's not once a season either.
once a week, or month, depending on usage and how well you get at preventative maintenance.
Learn how to peruse facebook market place, craigslist and other sources for bargains.
Nothing better than snagging a great deal on nearly new part by a guy who is upgrading or trading.
Not unlike our For Sale section here.

Good Luck and ask plenty of questions.
Most are happy to share the hard earn lessons.

Cheers.

PS.

After a day on the Water(Read:Fishing), if the ramp is crowded, we will float around and just wait for everyone to get Launched/Retrieved.
We are old, in no hurry and, frankly, it's entertaining.
I am confident I have seen the Prelude to many a Murder &/or Divorce.

Like a People of Walmart email, you simply cannot look away.
You can learn a ton, just watching others do it. right and wrong.

Carry an Emergency Medical Kit.
Metal Kit mounted in the boat or just the kit in a plastic Baggie.

Tow about that no problem. Trailer brakes for sure. I had some slippery boat ramps so always used 4wd low for straight pull to top, then back to 2wd.

My friend, do yourself a favor and invest in a set of leveling and anti sway bar that attach to your trucks hitch. You can control your boat or trailer weight distribution that way and also install a trailer brake controller you can adjust. These items will give you confidence in your equipment. After installed then like the man said, go to parking lot and practice backing with your trailer brake off. Enjoy your boat
