Re,
Or could also be a different SW version on radio.

M² Mods.
I don’t have access to the 2017 radio to confirm the SW version but I did perform a canbus reset. The aspect ratio didn’t change but there is a definite improvement in video quality. View is sharper and without a previous distortion in the upper portion of the screen.

Hi guys,i have a 17 2500 crew cummins slt with 8.4 radio with no factory BU cam.i bought a complete oem camera kit from ebay and went to install starting with the camera in the tailgate. It appears that my truck may already have all the camera wiring factory installed? is this possible ?? the harness in the tailgate looks just like the harness in the kit I bought....
I believe all trucks with the locking tailgate has that harness with the BC wires , check the next connector in the instructions and see if you have all 8 wires from the tailgate disconnect running forward towards the cab .

Unfortunately not all Ram's with an electronic locking tailgate have the harness needed for the backup camera. I have a 2017 Ram 2500 with that tailgate in which I installed the OEM camera and it did not have the needed harness for the camera. What Ram's with the electronic locking tailgate will usually have (see more at end of post) is a short jumper harness that goes from the tailgate to under the bed and ends just to the rear of the left rear wheel and should have the 8 wires if you have the electronic locking tailgate. This harness is less than 2 feet long. It connects to another harness that runs forward (the full length of the truck) to a connector that is behind the left front wheel and hidden by the plastic fender liner. This is the harness that you will need the 8 wires in. Mine had the 8 wires only in the short jumper harness, but only 2 wires in the harness running forward. Instead of using the OEM aftermarket kit, I used a custom harness made by M2Mods. It actually makes the installation OEM as if it came from the factory, the kit sold by Ram has differences from the factory OEM setup. More: To make matters even more confusing, there are some model Rams that do NOT have that short jumper cable.

I pasted below a pic of the connector that is behind the left front wheel.

Hey all probly not the place for this but I searched the forum and didn't find anything but would it be possible to add a cargo cam doing this route as well? Seen some aftermarket wiring kits with av plugs. Anyone have any diagrams to do that?
Thanks.
Sorry for the hijack.

M2 mods actually makes the harness for the oem cargo cam. It’s as close as oem as you will get and no rca plugs

I was kinda looking to make my own. I'm cheap but have lots of electrical experience. More or less want the rca plugs. Maybe I'll figure it out and let you all know.

And I believe DeereGuy is able to make it with an RCA if needed for those with aftermarket radio/camera module interface like the Customtronix Enzo or PAC module. As said the info is out there in the interwebs just not a fan of laying it all out for someone else to start selling what we already offer.

This would be for me personally. No other use.

I feel quite defeated here. I installed an RA2 radio and OEM backup camera kit 82214240 and ran the full harness in my 2016 Ram 2500 and it doesn’t work...When put in reverse I get a “Camera system unavailable” message. I have had the truck flashed by the dealer. One thing I noticed when accessing the radio settings under Safety/Assistance is that the only option shown is “Hill start assist.” There was no option displayed for the backup camera. I’ve checked all connector pin locations, connections, and splices (under PDC and on BCM connector), everything looks good. All wire colors and locations matched the instructions during installation. Truck was originally equipped with the VP1 and no backup camera. The VIN is 3C6UR5CJ6GG286491 if that helps.

What are my option since I’ve already installed the OEM camera and harness? Is there a “lock pick” solution that would allow me to force the radio to recognize the camera, or would an aftermarket radio resolve the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

No, I don’t get a blue screen, even when I had the truck flashed prior to installing the camera. Both before and after the camera installation I only got the “camera system unavailable” message. I had the dealer check it again after I installed the camera and have the same issue. The option for the park view camera is not in the radio menus either.

Few questions:
1) Is it possible to have a model truck that is unable to be programmed to turn on the camera with an RA2 installed? Mine came with the VP1 originally.

2) Are settings for the camera stored on the radio? If so, would getting an RA2 from a truck that previously had a backup camera enabled solve my issue?

3)Would an OBD Genie or similar solve this issue?

4) Since trucks with the RA1 use the rear view mirror to display the backup camera should I run the OEM body harness yellow wire to the C7 connector of the BCM as shown when using the rear view mirror monitor, then follow up with the relocation harness to the radio?

If you can’t tell I am desperate to resolve this issue. I spent too much money and time on OEM equipment to have issues that I was hoping to avoid by going OEM. Thanks

Sounds to me like your truck just isn't flashed for the Camera ?? XAC is the code .
The alpha OBD may be your best bet or try another dealer .

Also if Parkview isn't in your RA2 Settings then you need to update the software in the radio .

UPDATE:

After going back and troubleshooting again I believe I found the issue. The heat shrink I placed over the splice under the PDC was extended upward too far past my splice. The heat shrink was really stiff due to the adhesive and was causing a poor connection when the PDC was latched down. I removed the pin and placed a shorter pice of HS over the splice and ensured the pin was reseated well. Now the camera works, dynamic grid lines and all!

Now I just need to figure out how to get the camera settings added to the radio under safety/assist.

I've got a '15 Tradesman that originally had the RA1(?) that I swapped out for a RA2 (came out of a 2015 Ram) radio last year.

Ultimately I want to upgrade to a new 8.4 and do all of that but that is going to be a while down the road.

Reading through this thread I see that people aren't able to have the camera icon pop up on the screen of the radios from a 2015 truck - but does that mean the image won't show up on the screen either when you put the truck in reverse? I wanted to get a OEM mopar kit to wire up to the radio but want to make sure it'll work before spending the money on it?

Also, if I am able to wire up the kit to the RA2 radio and have it work - will I have to change it all when I eventually swap to the 8.4?

Thank you !

If you install the oem kit with the RA2 it will work 100% with gridlines and all with the 15 radio ....also completing the upgrade to an 8.4" radio ...RA3 without nav the RA4 with navigation threre is nothing else to do , meaning the backup cam will still work 100% just plug n play with the 8.4" display at that point [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Hope this helps !

I just picked up a 2013 express double cab that came with a RA1 radio. The first thing I did was upgrade to a RA2 that came out of a 2015 truck and added the mirror/harness/steering wheel controls to get Bluetooth voice calls. I had the dealer flash the XAC code when I brought the truck in to get the radio unlocked because I knew the next thing I would do is add a backup camera. After I had the code flashed, there was no blue screen when the truck was put in reverse and no camera options in the safety/assist menu, only hill start assist.

Now I have wired up the 82214240 camera kit but still nothing shows on the display in reverse and no menu options for the camera. I took the truck back to the dealer for them to confirm the XAC code was flashed. I also purchased AlfaOBD to verify the rear view camera is enabled.

I have double checked the wiring of the camera harness, but I assume the issue is within the radio/bcm? From browsing the forum I understand I should be seeing at least a blue screen in reverse with the XAC code flashed, even with no camera installed. Is that correct? Is there a specific software version I need to add to the radio if the donor truck did not have a camera?

Yes with XAC you should have the blue screen even without cam installed .

I would update the radio software just to make sure you have the camera option available when you get the flash figured out .
