Ok, frustration level is off the charts.... how in the love of freakin god do you get grease into the ******** fitting, yes I’ve located it with ease, I see the indentation with a tiny hole in the center, I have the Lincoln needle fitting that everyone recommends... I’ve tried for a ******** hour and have grease everywhere but in the fitting and coming out the back side like I’ve seen on numerous YouTube videos... it’s like I need 3 extra arms to even do this. No wonder 95% of people don’t even try

Take the shaft off and do on a bench. Much less frustrating.

That doesn’t sound much less frustrating to me, I can sense busted knuckles. Bolts, and frustrations getting it out and back in place

I purchased a Needle style Tip that can be inserted into the Center. Works good. I encountered the same problem as you.

Yeah as you are stating, I can't tell if any is getting in the zerk or if it all is just running out. Seems to me that a normal zerk would fit into this area, why they insist on these is beyond me! Why not have a sealed unit just like all of the others?
I swear the first couple times I did it everything went fine, now I have no idea if any is getting in there. Does anybody know if the little ball in there freezes up? Would tapping it lightly with a nail & hammer maybe free it up?

Bahaha. I’ve thought about removing mine just to grease it good and give a closer look. Hmmmm maybe I’ll remove it grease and do it every other oil change. I’m sure there’s trucks that’s never been greased skipping an oil change won’t hurt it

Since it's not a captive style zerk it's difficult for 1 person to do it with a traditional hand pump style grease gun (not enough hands).
Cordless grease gun is the ticket. Have done mine several times with ease and took just a minute.

My only issue is the leak where the needle meets the hose. MUCH more leaks out there than comes out of the needle. I asked the guy at the parts store about it and he said they all do it... Does the cordless grease gun fix this somehow?

Pistol grip grease gun is a must, unless you have a second person to pump the grease for you. I've only done it once so far, and had more trouble finding the port than anything else. Held the point against that fitting really well, and greased until I saw it come out of the other end of the bearing. Didn't have much come out around the fitting that I remember.

This is the setup that I used:

I bought one of these also, as I wasn't sure which fitting I was supposed to use, but never even used it since the other worked great.

Ditto what JMod45 said. It’s not that bad with the hand gun and proper tip. I’m not a gear head and had no problems once I order the right tip.

Instead of using the flexible whip extension, get a 6” rigid extension with a slight bend towards the tip. That way you can hold the gun body with one hand and the pump lever with the other. Jam the needle in there and pump away.

I usually balance the grease gun on my stomach while I use my hands to pump & put pressure on the needle to the zerk. I still feel like more runs out the side of the needle than what actually goes into the bearings. :fca5278d:

I was trying that, using my forehead and a couple other contortionist configurations, and still got I think nothing into the damn fitting. It’s got me so irritated I still haven’t gone back under the truck to try it again... and the best part.... after I get this one done, my truck is waiting for it also (me and my dad both have 3500’s lol)

Bottom Line? I just had to muscle it to get it in. I was really surprised how much force it needed.

It takes quite a bit of pumping but you'll know that you got some grease in there when it starts coming out other places than where you are pumping it in! Lots of good advice here but I'll add that I use a fully metal tip on the gun (not the rubber tipped adapters that work best on my chainsaw clutch) and if if any grease is coming out around the tip, press harder or move the shaft a touch to get a more square angle to it.

Even my dealer couldn't find it or get it greased. Finally, took a short 12" steel brake line and adapted one end to small grease gun and welded up the opposite end with brass. Ground it into a point of about 1/32" at the tip and ground it back over 1/4". Drilled it out with a small size number drill bit. Now can get to the zerk. To see weather or not it is actually taking grease, you can look from the rear of the joint and visibly see the ring of grease appear as it fills the void.. Initial lube took just over two pumps to get it fully lubed. Probably not necessary on every lube but certainly worth the time and effort to do it I feel.

theres no bearing in there. is a ball and socket with rubber boot. unless its dry, one or two pumps is plenty. otherwise it squirts out the back and makes a mess. i use flexible hose and lincoln needle, nothing difficult about it

I have owned a 2500 and currently a 3500 dually...put a slight bend in the end of the tip of your grease gun fitting and you'll be able to do it without issue...to find it look for a slight divot..the divot before the actual grease fitting is pretty easy to spot
