Noticed a darker then usual wet spot in driveway for maybe a week...I assumed just condensate from the A/C. Wrong...oil, a little more everyday. Finally checked the oil level and it was below the dipstick. Thankfully I didn't lose oil pressure...after topping off with some spare oil I picked up my 7 quarts and new filter and made it safely home. Now to locate the leak a can of brake cleaner later I started the engine and found my oil filter which was a little past 4000 miles or 50% per computer life was leaking through the case. Was it hit by a rock, manufacturer defect I'll never know?

Anyone experience similar issues, either manufacturer or a specific reason for failure?

Thanks!

Try a Royal Purple 20-820, that aint happeneing.

Actually, I've never experienced this issue before with any filter manufacturer and I've been changing my own since the mid 60's... I purchased a K&N to replace this one but not because I've lost faith in the manufacturer. I just liked the case design and specs a little more.

Yes. Had a similar experience before the first official oil change at the dealer. I think it was April or early May 2018. Had a drop of oil on the driveway. Didn’t believe it could be a leak...but it was. Had a long ish road trip planned in a week stopped at the dealer to have them at least have a look. . Bingo, they found a crease/crack in the original OEM oil filter. Changed under warranty and topped up the level. No idea how or why it happened.

2018 4x4 Sport Crew Cab 5.7 Hemi btw.

I haven't seen this either. Looks like the filter was hit by something. You can see some "buckling" of it in the picture.

I saw that too...wasn't sure if the "buckling" was from the manufacturer's process when making the base grip surfaces or not. They appear higher on the body than normal though...also could be distorted from internal pressure?

Wrong torque specs on power wrench installing filter on OEM engine? Creases look to be from over tightening to me.

On 1997 Crown Vics with a 4.6. If they ran 15/40 oil the oils would blow apart at highway speeds. The state troopers were have that problem.

Fram ultra is a very good filter. It is NOT the orange can of death.

Everyone here agrees it looks like it took a hit of some sort so why blame the filter?

How can we know any other filter would have held up any better?

How can we know the Fram didn't hold up BETTER than most?

I sure hope you guys aren't running Pennzoil with all the wax in it......

Friend of mine had a Fram filter blow apart while driving around town. Same thing happened to my nieghbor while delivering new travel trailers to dealers. 1st was a Chevy S10 and the other was a 2500 Ram with Cummins.

We had 2 Fram filters crack in the 1980’s. Haven’t bought a Fram since. They are junk filters

I've used all types of cheapo filters and I have never seen one leak(other than the seal)...It must have been damaged somehow.

‘Be been running billet micro mesh stainless clean-able filter units on my motorcycles for more than a few years now. How come this technology has not trickeled down to to the automotive world? (Granted i’ve not looked for them) Maybe we don’t want to get our hands dirty I guess by actually cleaning the filter, but you do get to look at the particulate in the filter, if you care to. Haven’t used Fram (and won’t) since the 80’s when they were blown off of high output Mopars at the drags.

I tend to change oil a head of schedule so only run dinosaur oil in my machines , the extra expense of synthetics pays no divided for short cycle oil users.

Years ago (late 80's) I worked at an auto parts store. Back then I was told if you had a Fram filter Chrysler would void your warranty. Not sure if this was actually true and if it was I'm sure they fixed that issue but the problem was they didn't have a check ball so if your filter was installed horizontally then the oil would run out of the filter meaning your engine had a few seconds of no oil every time you started it up. I will not buy a Fram

Pretty sure Chrysler will try anything to void your warranty in the current day as well :) Including ANY non-Mopar filter, not just Fram.
