Hello all.

Did my first oil change on my new to me 2017 Ram 1500 Big Horn and would like to avoid using an adjustable wrench to remove the cap over the oil filter housing the next go around.

If a regular sprocket is good, what size? If not, what are you guys and gals using on your trucks?

Cap over the oil filter? Are you referring to an oil filter wrench?

O had the dealer do my first oil change because FCA hired a gorilla to install the filters from the factory. Since then, I do my own oil changes and only put the filter on hand tight. Warm up the truck enough and with a good grip (gloves) and some elbow grease I can start to remove the oil filter by hand, no wrench required.

I had a pliers type filter wrench hanging around and it does work if necessary, you just need to finagle it into place.

Looks like the OP has a Pentastar V6 and I use a 15/16" 6 point socket on a flexhead ratchet, it works perfect and you don't have to remove the shroud to get at it.

Yes to the Pentastar. I'll give the 15/16 a try. Thanks.

Oops....I guess giving the specific engine specs would have been a good thing. Sorry about that.

You can also use a 24mm for the oil filter cap.

One or the other, just use a 6 point and be careful as some members have cracked theirs from over tightening.

I use a Lisle 24mm socket,

Lisle 13310 Low Profile Filter Socket, 24mm

on our Wrangler with the 3.6 engine that works well, inexpensive and available in many stores, including amazon. There is also another "wrench" available for this is well. Do a search for a Jeep Wrangler oil filter wrench and you will find it. I wish the HEMI oil filter was that easy to change...
