1000k!?!?? $600 a year for 10 is $6000 that’s very expensive insurance.
Well, I do have the dealer do it, I don't trust anyone else with Precious. I have to take a day off to get it done as they take almost all day to finish the job. I figure I lose $400 each day I do that (x10 per year), so real cost is only $4600 per year. I figure a replacement motor is about $5500. So when you assume that you would have to replace the motor every 10k miles, with those extended oil changes destroying the engine internals, I really come out ahead!

I change mine every 1000 miles, 3000 is risky. At 10k miles driven per year, that's only 10 oil changes annually and costs about $600 per year.

That's cheap insurance, to know I will never, ever have an internal engine problem!

Send your used oil to me, I'll put it in my truck. :)

Nope ... 5.7.... sorry
Judy even on a 5.7L thats wasted money unless you only drive 3k in 6 to 9 months. I have always done the 1st change a 3k to get the junk out, then its 5k or 6mo. I found that 5k at one point was taking me 9 month or more and my short drive was not "drying out" the oil so I went to a 6mo oil change cycle (it also helped due to the fact we had up to 4 cars at one point).

This is particularly true if you are running a full synthetic, but even a synthetic blend I would run the same.

I do oil when truck tells me 16000 KM or 6 months. Which ever comes first. Only use PUP and OEM/NAPA/PUROLATOR Filters. DO NOT ever use a Fram oil filter.

That's all I ever use on my '97 5.9 gasser and am now nearing the 300,000 mile mark. Plain old dino oil and Fram filters. The engine has never been touched.
So your "don't use Fram filters" remark has no real world facts behind it, just hearsay and second hand stories.

Regular, base or standard Fram filter = you are absolutely correct = they are crap!

The latest and greatest Fram ultra synthetic filter is actually VERY well rated, right up there with Wix and the other quality filters.

Actually there are multiple reputable scientific studies as well as shade tree mechanic resources online, showing how poorly the standard Fram is made, and how poorly it filters.

But, your real world experience, and likely your personal attention to frequent oil and filter change intervals is testament to the fact that proper maintenance will in many cases simply just get the job done.

On my 6.7 Diesel I keep it simple and do oil & filter every 7500. Every other oil change I do both fuel filters and the air filter. If you feed a diesel clean fuel, oil and air it will last a long time. Valvoline Blue oil, FCA & FleetGuard filters.

I am at the dealer now..dealer told me I must change my oil now..7450 miles.. was told I should change oil every 7500. I asked them about the owners manual it says 15000 or when the truck tells you... They said FCA says never go over 10000 and it will damage my truck and I might void my warranty. Told them to look it up .. they did.. said FCA has 15000 or 6 months. They still told me It was not a good idea and I want my truck to last do it under 10k miles...so my question is what do you guys think.....

Yup, the owners manual in my 2015 Hemi states every 6 months, 15,000 is ok. I'm old school. I have my oil changed every 5000. My dealer told me basically the same thing. Yes, FCA says 15,000 is ok per oil change intervals, but they (the dealer) don't recommend that.

I just shotgun all the fluids and filters front to back somewhere in the 10k - 12k range... Whatever antifreeze is on sale, Rotella for the engine, ATF+4 in the tranny and xfer case, 90-weight in the diffs... Fleetguard filters... I also replace the serp belt and tensioner pully... Rotate the tires, call it a day.

The wiper blades get replaced when they get grody...

Other than the tranny in my '98 RAM failing because they were crap from the factory, I've never had a problem with any drive train product.

I run the Ultra, but only with 5-40 or 0-40 Rotella since it is much more restrictive than OEM filter, but keeps oil clean looking much longer.

when using 15-40 it takes to long to see oil pressure with the Ultra when cold thus then use OEM filter

I had the dealer say the same thing to me and my reply is the ENGINEER said that the oil monitor is sufficient to use as a gauge to change your oil. They were so confident in it that they actually put it in writing to say the same thing AND the Lawyers for FCA agreed with that statement by allowing it to be put in the owners manual. SO I told the dealer I would take my chances with the warranty.

Since I'm an engineer and I know no engineer worth his salt is going to put something so important as oil changes in WRITING that could cost the company Millions of dollars in claims would just let that minor detail go to waste. My last oil change was 12k based off of the oil change monitor. The service writer didn't even blink, they just wrote it up and told me to have a seat.

Silly Wrabits

There is no risk to FCA seeing that a 6.7 owner went 120,000 miles on the original oil fill from factory.

But if you want to go a million miles; change oil more often

I remember reading an article some years ago by or in a consumer report. They went to a taxi company in NYC to do this long term test.

the bottom line was going 7500 miles, when the conventional theory and oil manf "guidelines" was to change every 3000 miles, resulted in no more wear than unit changed at 3K miles over the life of the test some 2 yrs.

If you want to waste oil and money change the oil every 3K miles, not a problem.. or go the full 7500 miles and save money and environment.. for me I go 7500+ on my 7.3L ford getting UOA at 7000 miles to see how it doing.

here is link to oil test.

I change mine when the system tells me to:

2016 Owners Manual Diesel Supplement: for 2500/3500/4500/5500

Oil Change Indicator System — Cummins Diesel

Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. This system will
alert you when it is time to change your engine oil by displaying the words

“Oil Change Due” on your Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) or Driver
Information Display (DID). The oil change reminder will remind the owner to change the engine oil
every 15,000 miles or 500 hours, whichever comes first, except for the Chassis Cab models
and Pickup models configured with optional B20 capability that are using B20 biodiesel, which
are 12,500 miles or 400 hours, whichever comes first. Failure to change the engine oil per
the maintenance schedule can result in internal engine damage.

Replace the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 miles (24 000 km) or six months, or sooner if
prompted by the oil change indicator system. Under no circumstances should oil change
intervals exceed 15,000 miles (24 000 km) or six months, whichever comes first.

NOTE: Under no circumstances should oil change intervals exceed 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or six
months or 500 Hours, whichever comes first.

15,000 miles sounds like an amazing, and desirable interval, but the time limit of not exceeding 6 months sounds pretty short. How many of us drive 30,000 miles a year?

Is it really so bad for oil to remain in the motor for more than 6 months? And does the oil life indicator just tell you to change it at 6 months, regardless of the mileage?

I have a new 6.7 diesel, and a 4 year dealer maintenance service contract, and want to have a plan.

Edit: I just checked my manual, and it states to change oil every 15,000 miles or 12 months, not 6 months. That seems more reasonable to me. I don't ever expect to exceed 15,000 a year, so I guess I will just do it once a year. That is a pretty simple plan.

I've got 11.000 miles on my CTD since I bought it last June. I did not get any message about changing the oil at 6 month from the evic or when it reached 12 months.
I am going to change it just for piece of mind though.

I tow a good bit and it makes me feel better to change oil & filter every 7,500 mi. No hard data or reason, just because it seemed like a good number. Fuel filters every other oil change and air filter every other fuel filter change. Makes a nice clockwork for doing maintenance. Front diff every year since I don't use 4WD much and rear diff with every air filter change.
