Have 2008 Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab 5.7l Hemi 4x4 - sounds exactly like wheel hub bearing - replaced both sides wheel hubs twice in part 9 months with last pair being timken replace sway bar links and bushing upper and lower control arms both sides with ball joints and outer tie rods replaced u joints in front driveshaft and both on rear driveshaft pull rear drive shaft and rear pinion but was loose enough to turn by finger so took apart and reset backlash and chAnged fluids in both diff and transfer case and still have this noise - placed rear on truck on jack stands and chalked front tires and ran truck up to 90 km - not a sound so it’s in front end somewhere or on front driveshaft as that wasn’t turning can feel it very slightly in steering wheel as fast slight vibration and increases with speed but does not change if truck under power or not or turning left or right - I stumped very slight probably normal play where front driveshaft attaches to front output shaft on transfer case - anyone got any ideas

Hi Jason - thatvwhat I thought as well so replaced all 3 ujoint - two in rear driveshaft and one in the front and checked the cv joint on front driveshaft as well - no Change - so I tried jack truck up and put on jack stands - rear of truck with front wheel ckalked - ram truck up to 90 km and not a peep - unless it front output shaft bearing in transfer case as I don’t think it spun in that configuration where front wheels didn’t move or in front diff - changed fluid in the front diff and was fine with hardly any particles on the magnet and both cv joints tight and fine - got to be something I missing - the front output shaft on transfer case does have slight play in the shaft when I push on it when driveshaft connected but I thinking it’s just splines meshing as it very fine and feels smooth when rotate and no leaks

Tire hum? Move fronts to back and back to front and see if I’m the “hum” moves towards the back.

Will try it - been chasing this for 2500 KM now - that why so many things tried and parts thrown at it - dealership even replaced both front CV axles - I going to take front drive shaft out and try that after the swap tires as well, if that don't work (just had out the other day and checked the CV joint that comes out of transfer case and replaced the U joints and should have taken on road trip then, if don't hum on that then I thinking it must be the CV joint or front output bearing in Transfer Case - I will find it eventually - just never had anything so hard to find before - thanks for all the ideas though

Swapped tires front to back no change - gonna remove front driveshaft again and drive - noticed today though that it will change if going down highway over like hump and will change in sound with truck going threw the change in height from the hump - doesn’t go away only changes pitch as truck articulated though the raise and lowering of chassis then continued as it has been

Jacked back truck up again and ran it up to 110 - no sound - got out truck and looked under it and it definitely is not the front output shaft from transfer case or front driveshaft as it was spinning very fast and no sound - only think not moving was front cv joints and front tires so it’s in the front in one of those areas- new wheel hub assemblies twice in less than 1000km with current with current ones being timken And both cv joints night no torn boots hmm do u think strut assembly would make that noise - no signs of bad struts or bushings but they are the originals but I did see the new upper control arm bolts out front end side - bolt touched that “hat” that the strut sits in that I can’t even get paper threw the seem - maybe that could be vibrating as we get moving along - lol getting desperate

If bolt is touching that might explain when you hit bumps the sound changes. Do you see any signs that the bolt is touching? Paint gone/ shiny spots that indicate it is hitting?

Yes bolts - one on left and one on right side and of truck on upper control arm is hard against the “hat” that the strut fits into on top of strut which may explain why I not been able to find this fir so long - I gonna back bolt off and maybe nip a bit off like 1/8 inch as have 3/4 or more extra threads showing or place washer on bolt head side of assembly to pull the bolt away from strut tower - it is same setup on both sides - if it not this then I don’t know - I gonna put while truck on jack stands and put in 4x4 and run it up to see if the bolts don’t work as it got to be somewhere in front - loud enough you got shout to hear other people talk in truck so it’s should be easy to find where wearing so long but can’t find anything else worn or and bad bushings ect but got to be one somewhere unless I luck out and the bolts are causing a vibration on strut tower - I update on when get few minutes to do it this week

So I jacked entire truck up today and put each corner on jack stands - left all 4 tires on and put truck in 4 high - ran it up to 40 no sounds so took foot off throttle and when truck isles back two tires spin and driver side front - got back in and run it to 60 and got bad vibration - while truck shook left to right - sideways like - no humming though - put brakes on and stopped tires and put in neutral and shifted to 4 low - idling front drivers and rear passenger turns no noise - give her gas all 4 turn and shakes is back but no noise- doing this way not much weight on struts but can test everything else that got to do with driveshafts and cv joints and u joints - thinking something not right when passenger side spins in front as while truck shook - also thinking where struts has no weight on them and thus were not weight bearing that those bolts must be the problem or the strut bushing in drivers side as the lower control arm was replaced on passenger side so all new on that side same as top control arms on both sides - either the bushing or the struts or that bolt - thinking we getting there on the humming but may have found something else wrong with passenger side shake though

Drive shaft out of balance. Tires out of balance. Plus bolts could all add up.

I not sure as when both driveshaft spinning no problem until front passenger wheel began to spin So I don’t think it’s driveshaft - it definitely could be tire related as far as shake and I going to do those two bolts on upper control arms next to see if the hum is gone - might even be thrown wieght on passenger wheel but I don’t feel that when driving down highway - slight vibration nothing like today when jacked up and in 4 wheel drive and only when front passenger spun not when just back and front driver side spun - we getting closer though I think - thanks for any ideas

Well I finally found it - the bushing fir the lower control arm at the strut location is almost gone - replaced and like new again and no noise and didn’t realize how much truck had small shake in it till now - bolts for upper control arm have whole in strut mount HSt where these bolts go so they don’t hit - couldn’t see that till cleaned yrs worth crud out - at least it is found and hopefully someone else can learn from it as well

Well it’s back - more quiet but still there - only thing left is either lower control arm bushing - seem fine and ate not torn nor bang or strut with no outward signs of trouble or it the rear end which did have leaking pinion seal that caught on 1 st day but maybe there was damage - no play or whining from pinion when truck up on jack stands and run truck up to 80 km - I just don’t know - some disgusted
