The first time I upgraded the head unit was back in 2013. So I haven’t paid attention to stereos since then. I currently have a Pioneer Avh-3500bhs 6.1 screen. Looking to upgrade to Pioneer AVH-W4500NEX. I’m think on getting this one because of the features: mirror link for my iphone, dvd player (I dvd headrest units installed as well), dual back up camera capable and it’s about a 7 inch display.

Is there any other head units that are close that I should take a look at? Also any tips or tricks for when I go to install it. Has anyone else used a different dash kit other than this one? Because I personally think this one is horrible https://www.amazon.com/Metra-95-6511-Chrysler-Jeep-DDIN/dp/B00133VQWE

Also anyone have any fitment issues? My truck is a 2012

I just installed the Pioneer 4500 in my truck this summer and really like it. The wireless carplay is the main reason I chose this model of another. It's nice to not to alway have to plug the phone into the headunit in order to get carplay.

Did you install it yourself? If so any tips or issues that you ran into?
How’s the navigation and mirroring?
Are you using the iDatalink?

thanks

I did install it myself. I bought it from crutchfields, I got the Idatalink, and also paid extra for their harness. It went smoothly and with their harness it was all plug and play. It was an easy install. The hardest part was cutting the brace in the dash to make room for the unit. I used a sawsall to do that, so it wasn’t hard to do that.

Would you mind to post a pic of your setup? I'm desperate to upgrade my tradesman and the Chinese Tesla thread has really turnedy stomach as far as going that route. Also if you have any links to the items you used would be nice.

I just installed a Pioneer 2550NEX this weekend. I used the AXXESS harness. I did not get the steering wheel module because I dont have the steering wheel controls. The only issue I currently have is the back up camera is not coming on. I get a black screen when I put the vehicle in reverse. I like the headunit and the Apple Carplay works good. I paid $320 for the head unit $16 for the mounting bracket and $84 for the harness total of $420.
I am waiting for Axxess tech support to call me back regarding the backup camera.

I also ordered the bypass which is about $10

I paid $976.86 for the radio and everything that was needed to install it in my tradesman.

Thank you. That looks pretty clean. We're you able to keep the rearview mirror backup camera?

Mine didn’t have the backup camera in the mirror, but on the radio screen. The backup camera does look better on the new head unit the on the oem one.

did you manage to get it installed? Would you recommend it?

Sorry for being off topic. Maybe you can help me. I'm on a quest for a new stereo. I've been reading reviews about Pioneer stereos but they are useless hype. It's beyond me why people are doing it.

This head unit landed on my short list AVH-4500NEX. From all the blogs that I've read one stood out. The blogger was hyper critical about Pioneer and put me on the fence. Well this Pioneer nav review was OK until I've reached the shortcomings section.

How hard is to install these units anyways? How long does it take to connect your phone to the HU? Is it that bad?

Ideas?

Kenwood DDX9905S is a great deal now for around $425 new on Amazon. Is a first 720p HD display and is a reference series HU with better HD audio processing etc. I bought one for my 2010 Camaro ss and added maestro to it, is really really nice stereo. IS same as the 2019 just released recently XR series that is top of line. Google maps looks really cool in satellite view with the 720p display. No other big name company is making a 720p or better display as far as I know, it also has its own gps antenna that comes in box to lock in to signal better. Plus supports almost every audio format like flac. Even has input to connect certain radar detectors so it shows on your stereo and a dash cam can be bought that can be viewed etc through stereo. Is basically a $800+ stereo for 1/2 price being its older model(like 1 year old). You would think car stereos would be HD(all of them by now) but only this one and Kenwood xr new line has HD(720p). I am using the uconnect 8.4 w nav in my 13 Ram, but after changing most of the speakers in the Alpine system to jbl gx series and adding a 1,600 watt Amp and 2 kappa 1200w subs in a fiberglass box, along with a Amp pro ch41 I am very satisfied with the sound quality. If I did not have the 8.4 in my Ram the Kenwood would for sure be my first choice after owning it and seeing how great it is. This photo is it, in my 2010 SS.

Did you end up getting something installed with a new dash kit? Having the same issue trying to find a dash kit for a double din on the 2012. I read through reviews on the Metra 95-611 installed on our year Ram and I was not impressed.

I just installed one of these.. it absolutely needs a dash kit. You have a few options there - i went a little expensive and installed a metra turbotouch kit, part number 99-6527B. With the right version of firmware that dash kit retains all you need and works well.

That dash kit is sweet, but is for the 2013+. Doesn't seem there are any real good dash kits for the 09-12.
