My 2018 Ram 1500 with 5.7 Hemi started to smell like burning oil. checked garage floor and noticed a 10" puddle of oil. i changed the oil about 800 mile ago but it started leaking recently after the temperature dropped to about 10 degrees. it looked like it was coming from the oil filter area so i checked if the filter was tight and it was as tight as i could get it. i used Mopar 4892339AA filter. just install a Mobil 1 oil filter and so far no leaks. I did check to make sure there was only one gasket. how can a filter leak?

Could have a bad gasket on the filter. You can over tighten and it will leak.

Sometimes it's not crimped properly. Happenes more often than you'd think. Nothing to worry about if it quit with filter swap.

My '09 1500 never leaked but the thing I've seen most when I did this crap for a paycheck were leaks caused by using an oil filter wrench to tighten (OVERtighten) the filter. That causes the gasket to deform, (squeezes in or out) causing leaks. Also saw one that had a small dent with a tiny hole (couldn't even see the hole) that leaked.

Looks like you're good to go with the new OF. Good work brother.

I use Royal Purple on my 5.7. Last oil change, I noticed a small oil drop on the filter. Took it off and looked like the lip around the seal looked dented. I replaced it with another RP and so far no leaks.

Did you put your finger in the new oil and run it around the gasket on the new filter. That could make a leak by a dry fit

Is the filter on the Gen 5s in the same stupid area as the Gen4s?
