This happened a handful of times last year. As most of the country we got really cold & once again my heater was not blowing hot air. Coolant temp was bouncing between 185-210. Truck is a 2016 2500 with just over 50k on the 6.4. I would find it hard to believe that the heater core is already plugged up. I did a search & a guy on here back in October was having the same issues but his is a 14' and he has replaced his thermostat & possibly got air trapped in the system. My coolant system has never been opened up so I don't think that is my issue. Any ideas?

Not sure if this means anything but i had a slight antifreeze smell like other people have said they had. One day after work i opened my Reservoir and it burped air real bad like air gargling out from under the freeze that was in there.seemed like air was trapped.after that I haven't smelled the antifreeze in front of the truck since. But it is a lot colder now not sure if that makes a difference or not. Maybe you do got air trapped try it see if it helps. Or listen for the blend door moving maybe its stuck.i have 48000 miles and bought it with 35000 so i dont know if the system was ever opened.

I let it cool down a bit & then opened the reservoir. It gurgled a little but didn't help any on the drive into work this morning. It is a little low (at the min. line when hot) so I will add a little OAT to it. I am thankful I have heated seats or my drive in to work would really be cold!

Burp the system.
Open the reservoir, with engine on, allow to heat up until thermostat kicks in.
Squeeze repeatedly the lower radiator hose.

Obviously be careful and watch your reservoir tank to not overflow.

You most likely have a pocket of air trapped.

Good luck.

Hello 68PowerWagon,
We are certainly sorry to hear about your heater concern. Have you considered addressing this with your dealer? If you decide to go this route and would like an additional layer of assistance, please reach out to us privately.

512RAM, You went to the same "Old school, shade tree mechanic" course I did"!

OP, the fact that your temp is jumping around is almost always because you are low on coolant, causing air pockets.
That causes the engine to heat the coolant more than normal as it circulates. Then it burps and passes by the temp sensor, causing fluctuations. Be careful, that "air" is actually steam.
When it is cool, remove the radiator cap and verify. Like 512RAM said, quickly & repeatedly squeeze the lower hose. I will bet you need to fill it to just below the cap.

I'm "only" 43, however at 12 years old, I did manage to drop a 460 into my 64 falcon for my first car. I learned just about most from my shade tree mechanic neighbor.

For topping off my system can I use Prestone DexCool Antifreeze? I think it is/or compatible with OAT Antifreeze.

Yeah... I am not going to pay 100's of dollars at a dealer to have something fixed that should still be on warranty. REALLY not happy FCA followed GM on backing down their warranty from 5/100,000 to 3/36,000!

If you have your ac on full and turn over to heat does it still blow the same cold or does the air get a little warmer. Im wondering if your blend door is stuck.can you here it change over.

are both heater core hoses hot ? if the heater has worked fine in years past then i would suspect the blend door. blockage of the core seems highly unlikely imo

I did this & could hear the door move when I changed to cold & moved again when I took it back to hot.

It acts a little like when an air conditioner is low on refrigerant. When the ambient temperature is higher, say around 40, it blows a little hotter.

I know it’s probably not going to be it but when was the last time you changed your cabin air filter. My cousin was complaining about a lack of heat in his car. Once we changed out his cabin air filter he was roasting himself out cause the filter was packed full of ****.

My year of truck didn't come with one. Everything but the door is there to put one in, I just haven't done the diy mod.

Understandable but sometimes it’s the dumbest thing we over look that causes a problem. Sucks though not having the correct amount of heat when it’s needed
