Made the plunge several months ago for the 4.88 gear swap, and let me tell you that it makes a world of difference. I made a run towing around 8K lbs over the weekend, and it towed it right along at 80mph without any trouble. Most of the time I didnt even run it in T/H mode, mostly because it locks out 6th gear, which got me to thinking. Is there a way to reprogram the 66RFE behind my 6.4 to shift into 6th when in T/H mode? The trans seemed to do fine, but I would like to have the advantages of the firmer shifting, grade braking, etc. available i T/H mode, but I just dont need it to lock out of 6th because of the lower gears. My truck basically runs 6th gear like a stock 3.73 truck in 5th anyway. Anyone now if this is possible? I know the Cummins guys dont have 6th locked out in the 68RFE. Just wondering if the 66RFE would be programmable to be the same.

8k at 80mph.

Your crazy dude. I’m sure there’s definitely a way for somebody to write a tune to use six gear with a towing tune. But DANG. Your rolling almost 16,000lbs at 80mph.[emoji15][emoji15]

Trucks rated for 12K towing with the stock 3.73s, and the brakes and other running gear is rated for 17K in the diesel trucks. I figure Im well within my tow rating with the 4.88s. After all, a 5500 wth 6.4 and 4.88s is also rated for 17K, so I figure my truck is OK with the kind of weight Im hauling.

Besides, you run the interstate in Tx at anything less than 75, you're gonna get run over.

Your may have missed my point sir. I know the truck an do it. Iv done 15,000 with mine.

Im saying....slowing down may be a wise choice sir. For your sake and others. Thats a lot of weight and you have 4 contact patches smaller than the size of a paper plate that are controlling it.

Not trying to cost trouble here. We just see something that is a bit un-safe in the provided scenario.

No worries brother. Im not gonna tear out for that kind of haul with sub-par equipment. That weight was easily controlled at speed, with good brakes on the trailer, and I had 12 tires on the ground, not just the 4. Plus, Im very well versed in towing on that route. Ive got a commercial license and have lots of miles under my belt hauling that kind of combined weight. Run good equipment, keep your wits about you, and anicipate what the other idiots on the road are gonna do will help keep you safe out there running that kind of load. However, thats not to say that Im immune to incident either. In any case, I hear ya, and I appreciate your concern. Youre right, 80 is a little fast, and I dont maintain that kind of speed with that kind of weight always. There was just a couple times I got that fast, not the whole trip. I was just using that to illustrate how easy the truck handled it.

80 is about right on the interstate. Less and you are a hazard to others. Ie, your the problem. Those of you in other states, please don't move here and 'fix' us to be like you. Just saying.

OK, I'll run next to ya. All good answers to my concern. Gotta admit, I hit 80 a few times although with maybe 5500 lbs. My 2500 6.4 CCLB smoothes it out a bit. That long wheelbase tows way better than my shorter vehicles.

Thats one reason I traded my 14 for this one. The long wheelbase makes things so much easier for several reasons.

I was grossing 23,160 with my '15 6.4. I tow at 65-68, even in TX. Never got "run over".
