Hello all, Ive never set up a rearend or anything and I was wondering how to install a new ring and pinion on my 83 w150. Im hoping someone knows of some links or diagrams. Something i could use to do this. The rear diff has new everything but the mechanic who did it said the old ring and pinion would need to be replaced to mesh up l guess and i cant afford to have it done by him so wanted to tackle it myself and hopefully not destroy the rearend all over again.

Will 2001 3.55 gear ratio axles work for my 83 w150?? I found some for 150 each.
Sorry for all the dumb questions.

as long as you match the front and rear gear ratios, any ratio will work.

any 1972 - 1993 rear axle will bolt up to the truck. However, the wheel bolt pattern went from 5 x 4.5 to 5 x 5.5 I THINK around 1982 or so. So you'd have to swap axles shafts if you do go with an older one. I don't have much experience with the front axle but would have to assume that would bolt over directly as well. The frame and suspension on the 72 - 93 trucks didn't really change much at all.

3.55 is a good 'everyday' ratio but I don't think a 2001 will be a direct bolt on.

you may want to verify the front gear ratio first but the more common ratio was 3.23 in trucks without overdrive. 3.55 only became very popular after 89-90 when they started using overdrive.

That Dana 44 is very practical and durable.... and very easy to work on. You do not necessarily need to replace the ring and pinion just because they are used. Your final mesh pattern is what counts. Also, be VERY careful where you obtain parts.... there are some real sub-standard pieces out there!

Something to consider on a front axle swap is what year did they switch from the 1 piece passenger side axle to the 2 piece axle with the engagement coupler?
