Is there any harm in running PUP 0W-40 in my 5.7 hemi? I can get it really cheap through my local dealer since I have a relative that works there. Keep in mind I live in Northern Ontario so it gets pretty cold in the winters.

Gys do run that in the 5.7, but in that cold, I wouldn't if it were me. You could mix it with 0w20.

Why wouldn't you recommend it?

Mike and I may be at an indifference here

Im not going to lie. Id try it if i had a block heater. It basically turns into a slightly thick 30W. But id do my OCI in the fall to give the oil enough to shear a bit to that 30w.

JMO.

It is thick in the cold.

So weight is weight, winter rating hardly moves the needle as far as cold visc. So if you look at 20 weights and 30 weights cold viscosity, the bottom two, you see they are still thick, but nothing like a 40 weight or higher. Now, just 20 or 30 degrees lower and these numbers can be ten time times as thick as these.

Mind you that chart is 32f, if you get sub zero weather 0w40 can be 10,000 plus viscosity and 30 weight would be about 1/2 of that somewhere around 5000 viscosity, twenty weight would be lower then that, but not much. In cold places I'd only run 40 weights if they are recommended.

Mind you 20 weight at engine temp run at 9 visc, 30 weight runs at 12 visc, 0w40 PUP runs at 13.7 visc. But as you see for this 1 viscosity difference, you pay for it in cold areas. You wont sacrifice that much by going 0w30 m1, it is a very good cold oil and will be thicker at operating temps then the 5w20 the manu wants. just my opinion

To be fair.

Looking at the 5w30 vs the 10w30 on the chat there is a good difference. So i bet a 0w40 would be a good amount better than the 10w40 on the chart.
Not saying it would be anywhere near the 20w but i think it would be a very “notable” difference.

for sure, just not as large as the weights. I will see if I can find a 0w40 chart, seams like all the charts are old school charts, and 0w40 popularity is a newer thing in comparison. You have to laugh when you see 10w30 in a chart.

You see the differences on winter ratings and the difference in weight. The dot is the same cold temp.

No sir. Have an AutoZone, OReilly, and Advance Auto. Problem I am running into is I need two different oil filters, 15 quarts of PUP, and 2 bottles of Lubgard. No one has Lubgard in stock in town, Advance has one filter, OReilly has the other filter, no one in town has the PUP in stock. Summit Racing has free shipping on orders over $100, so wanted to order everything online from one place. But it looks like I'll have to order from a few different places.

Amazon.

When I know it's going to be quite a bit colder overnight I just throw my magnetic pan heater on and she's nice and quiet.

Last week we had -28 only for a night then back in the 20's and 30's.

This week I know a couple nights look like -15 overnight.

I'll try and remember too look at my oil temperature when I go to start it in the morning to see how effective it is and let everybody know.

Do you have any pics or a model number for the magnetic heater?

Why not make it easy on yourself and install a Block heater?

Think i read those are an extreme pain to get out on Subarus, ( the factory plug for it i mean) anyway i donno just figured that one would work good enough. Doesn't ever get below 14 and thats a real extreme. Usually we get a couple of 24 degrees here every year.
