Hello everyone ,

i have a 2015 1500 with the 5.7 (52,000 miles) . Just checking my oil after about 4500 miles and noticed the oil level is about 1/4 of the way down into the safe zone . Just wondering if this is normal consumption and about how much oil is this ?

please see picture thanks .

IMHO< you R OK. Also depends if dino, semi or full synthetic. These creatures run very hot. In the summer, MY 19 uses some oil, just too hot at 110 out, BUT that is my situation, and IMHO..... Others will chime in and say no way. A lot have reported Dealers said normal. So really, U neva just not know, unless that puppy starts burning/draining/leaking, but again all IMHO....

IF I was doing a lot of towing here, I would have put in a secondary oil cooler, due to temps so high here and these things run at 200 degrees plus ne way in summer, just saying...

You're lucky it's only down that far.As far as getting that fixed(unless there is a visible leak)from using that much there isn't a dealer in North America that would touch that. Not saying it's right but that's just the way it is.

How long has it been sitting before you checked it?

If it was perfectly filled at the last oil change and it’s gone down to there in 4500 miles. That is well within industry standards for oil consumption. Industry standard is like 1 quart per 1000 miles. To me that’s crazy high but is what it is.

I'm going to disagree with others here. With such low mileage you have to question why you are losing any oil.

I would suggest that you do the following:
Make sure the engine is cold.
Measure the oil level - take a photo
Top up oil - measure how much you put in.
Drive 2500 miles and note the level - take photo.

You are now due for an oil change.

Repeat and watch the levels.

I would also crawl under the truck and look for oilly dirt.
Clean up the engine where you can and be prepared to get under there again to look for oily dirt.
Check filter for tightness.

Do you change your own oil? If not I suggest you start doing it.

You can check to your hearts content but there's not a dealer known to man that will do anything about until it is much, much worse if it's going through the motor. If it's leaking then that's a whole different issue. They can't argue that.

I might be wrong but I think it is better to find the problem and point it out to the dealer until waiting until it gets worse.

Assuming there’s no leaks, if you go to the dealer complaining your engine used maybe 1/2 a quart in 4500 miles, absolutely nothing will happen.

Ive dealt with this a lot, FCA uses industry standards. The accepted rate of oil consumption for a 2015 1500 with a 5.7 is 1 quart in 2000miles. They actually released a TSB for it. Their standards used to be much worse than that, was like 1 quart per 1000miles.

I personally don’t agree with it, but that’s what FCA uses, so they won’t pay a dealer to investigate a concern that is within that spec.

There are things to check though if there’s no leaks, PCV valve is the first thing. As well if you drive it like a hot rod it’s going to use more oil than normal. Also you can try switching oils, if you’re using a cheap oil it may be consumed faster compared to other oils.

I agree that the dealer won't address it.

But if it were my truck I would want to know why. It could be as simple as when the oil was changed it wasn't filled fully.

I had a Dakota that was losing oil. I got under the truck and looked for oily dirt. I traced it up the engine to the valve cover that was loose.

For sure, he’s due for an oil change. So best thing is to get it done/do it himself. Note oil level after the oil change and go from there.
